Default Snake Bite First Aid ( serious thread)

PLEASE

Make sure you have basic snake bite first aid equipment in ANY vehicle you are driving...

Snake bite first aid advice... Apply pressure bandage to length of limb, immobolise limb... Immobolise patient... GET STRAIGHT TO EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

went to view property at Casuarina this arvo, drove the getz... Not the 4x4 that has all the basics in it... HE gets bitten by a snake that he trod on

5 ft long... unidentified but Brown colour and NOT happy at being stood on....

Long and short of it is, because we were in the getz all I could do was shove HIM in the back of the car and break every speed limit between Casuarina and ED at Shockingham... if I got caught on camera I WILL loose my driving license.

Within ten minutes of bite HE has severe weakness in left side, blinding headache and nausea. Also no vision in left eye..

Arrived as a priority one ... Straight in... No questions... Immdeiate medical attention.... the staff were bloody brilliant...

currently stable, And cardiac monitored with more bloods due overnight...so I have been sent home to get some sleep as tomorrow I'm back to the same hospital with Kevin to have the baby that has died inside her but not spontaneously miscarried removed... And take Hop a long kid to her week long school camp and was taking mumbles to his speech appointment at PMH.... The speech therapy will wait...

Thank GOD I'm currently on work related stress leave

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Make sure every vehicle you drive has a BASIC snake bite kit in it.. Plenty of pressure bandages...

OMG Eddie you are having such a time of it at the moment. Wish I could help and I know it's not much but have some hugs from us here. Hope HE gets over it quickly, and make sure you get some time for TLC for you too.

Its the hardest thing in the world, being sent home from hospital because its going to be a long night and you need some sleep.... And HE is stable....

Atnleast I'm taking Kevin and The1 to the same hospital in the morning so I dont have to travel in two different directions.... Thats my silver lining to my little cloud

Thanks for the snake reminder, I would add, if you have a rural type property, wear gumboots/workboots in garden in summer/spring, it sounds crazy in 38C heat but mine have saved me from at least one snake bite and one batch of fire ants.

Sorry to hear your having a rough time right now.

Good to hear you acted in time.

We were at the local country show over the weekend and one of the things we saw was a demonstration by a snake catcher including all kinds of nasties.

He then told us exactly what to do in an emergency, we bought a couple of bite kits there and then for $10 apeice. They just clip onto a belt and you're set in any situation.

I didn't realise that the venom travelled a lot quicker due to muscle movement, hence the 'keep still' advice.

Given we walk a fair amount in the local forest and our yards are pretty big it's a good thing to know ...

The OH had the RSPCA out on Saturday actually to check out a snake near the house. Can't be too careful.

Hope he makes a quick recovery

Well, saw him this morning... Hop a long kid didnt wwant to go to camp wih Dad in hospital, so took her along to show her he IS still alive ... And we are waiting for the next set of bloods from Charlies....

Looks like a graze evenomation, not full, which is a blessing because the symptoms suggest Westertn Brown or Tiger... Still monitored and all tubes attached, but asked me to phone his boss to let him know he should be in by smoko this morning.... HE asked me to feed the pet snake HE brought home on fathers day, I told HIM to **** off...

He also asked me whether the Dr he saw this morning was the one I would have bypassed ED and gone straight to the vets if he had been on duty yesterday arvo... i said "what Arxxx??????" HE goes yes... I laugh and said I think more of Monty than to let that one near him..... Guess who pops out from behind the curtain of the bed next door?

Hi Eddie he says.... I got one of those menopausal flushes I keep getting... Or I may have blushed, not too sure which...

There's not a lot I can say, apart from stay as safe as you can (especially driving) and take care of yourselves. Things can only get better.
