Everyone knows that concise action is required to save lives (i.e. selective annual cull - fire arms ban). But the fck wits that have authority to do so, will continue to find reasons not to.

And thus, there will be more threads like this in the future - started when the next poor bugger is eaten alive.

The argument goes that humans are more dispensable than sharks as there are shit loads more of us and we require sharks in the sea for a healthy marine eco-system - ie; provide us with fish and chips. At the end of the day people know the risks of going into the sea and the chances of being attacked are far lower than dying making toast.

I kind of look at shark attacks as I do the mentally ill who wander into the Lion Enclosure at a zoo.

Everyone knows that concise action is required to save lives (i.e. sectioning). But the fck wits that have authority to do so, will continue to find reasons not to (overcrowded institutions, under-resourcing).

And thus, there will be more threads like this in the future - started when the next unlucky contestant is eaten alive

Very good.

I must admit slight surprise at the total explosion of shock and rage when a surfer gets taken. It is tragic that it happens, but the bottom line is that surfers surely know the dangers involved any time they go into the ocean.

Simples - their ocean, their territory. We go in at our own risk.

What's the point of killing it ?

p.s. I heard one surfer on the radio quoted as saying that he cannot afford shark repellent 'cos he is on the dole. Apart from the issue of my tax money paying for some lazy bastard to surf, I would suggest that if he wants to surf without it then he takes the risk.

First shark deaths on those islands for some fifty odd years I believe I read.

I did hear there were two sharks involved in the Seychelles attack. One said "Fancy pancakes for breckie?" the other said "No thanks, I just had a full English"

My OH went team building recently at Bunkers - the activity was to kayak out to the headland to see the seal colony.
I point out to her at the time who's staple diet seals were
Know this beach well, beautiful spot.
I guess being on the whale route also keeps the big predators around.

I know the dangers of redback spiders lurking under my outdoor furniture. That's why I spray poison under it three times a year.

Or perhaps I could just take yours and the Nerd above's approach, and venture onto the patio at my own risk.

Whereabouts do you live? Do you see these redbacks quite often?

Its not really a similar analogy though, is it? It'd be more akin to you spraying all your garden and anywhere you might walk, just in case you're attacked by a rabid redback.

(I don't spray my patio either, perhaps I'm a tree hugger at heart :) )
