Scanning old B&W photos
#1
My son has a school project on his family tree. I scanned a whole load of old (some very old) family B&W photos for him to use. I have a very good Canon scanner that produces great colour scans but these B&W ones are crap. They are yellowish and just don't look right.
Any tips, software that I can use?

I think for best results you'd want to scan them where possible - but I photographed a load of old B&W ones (out of laziness) and they came out quite well.
They were from the very early 70s - I can see how much older ones would have issues with yellowness
Perhaps drop Tiddlypom a pm, she might be able to give you some real advice

There's an Android app called CamScanner - It's on Google Play - I have used it very successfully for photographing photos and other documents.
It automatically handles keystoning of the photographs etc. It's very good. Will probably need to turn the flash off if the photos are glossy though...

Don't need me then. Have fun. I use CamScanner too but generally, for documents.

I've got the Canoscan 9950F and find the software that comes with it great for just about every type of scan.
There are a lot of settings that you can set with this software.

Have you got a Mac, when you pop them into iPhoto, you can play with the tones and colours, black and white and Sepia tones etc.
