I think some races/nationalities have become too accustomed to having people walking on eggshells on the matter of race. Aussies just wont do it.
As someone said, its more dumb ignorance than malice although I would pity an American working in corporate Australia.

Re: Australia slammed as racist and backward
What an incredible comment from an obvious asshole.
Telstra, the company that he headed, is probably one of the worst respected companies in Australia. It's a byword for poor customer service and expensive prices, as well a monopolistic practices.
In my opinion, in this day and age the telecommunications infrastructure of a country is a large component of that countries modernity and success and Telstra, under Sol, have screwed Australia royally.
As well as that, how on earth a foreigner, given a job in Australia and paid obscene amounts can say they are racist is beyond me.

There was much controversy when he was appointed not a popular move and us small telstra shareholders who bought the shares because we never agreed to it being sold have never been happy and there are lots of us. Telstra tried to buy them back from us a while ago but not many took it up its more a position and a protest hanging on to them than an investment.
I am glad he has gone never a fan. To play the racist card how silly, personally I am sure everyone in their life has a chance at some time to play the racist card whoever we are but being humans the intelligent people realise we can't like everyone whoever they are and nor should we be made to.
If someone said "goodbye" to me in Mexico instead of adios I would not think they were being racist I would think they were trying my language. Just a different view.
He should thank us for having him after receiving $32million dollars.

Aussies in general are not racist....more Brits and Americans are too politically correct.
Political correctness is what has ruined the UK IMHO

The fundamental difference is that Australians except that Australia is a multicultural society..English still see England as for English people.

I have worked for an American company in Europe and found a lot of their values to be lip service. It was all talk. Many of the execs had redneck roots and were proud of it.
One of the most respected and liked managers in this environment was an Australian. Funny how Aussies pop up in places..

It was the tone - which was dismissive which would have caused offence. Telstra is not popular.
