in summary: mining boom. wages in WA are high when compared to the rest of the world (and even other parts of australia) and this partly compensates for everything being expensive. there are people earning extraordinary salaries there, mainly in industries connected to the mining boom.
but obviously some not all sectors of the economy are benefitting.

A meal out is certainly expensive in Perth. On business trips I'll pay 30 dollars in Melbourne and 45 in Perth

I rarely drink in Perth. Last time was December after the works Xmas party. Went on to some place in the city and ordered a vodka and soda. Handed over $20 and she came back and said I hadnt given her enough money! It was $28 for a single vodka.
As for mining, I don't think that is the reason. Mine sites do employ unskilled staff for things like bar work and cleaning and things. But most don't last / wouldn't want to do it. The biggest employer of these is ESS and the going salary is $52k a year for 2 weeks on 1 off doing 96 hour weeks split shifts.

Beer aside, food and coffee is expensive too. Coffees range from $4.20 for a small cup and cooked lunches average $9. Ofcourse you get the exceptions like Chilliz and Taka who sell cooked lunch boxes from $4 but that's only two businesses. I went to the NX100 food court and the same place I go to now charges $11.50 when three months earlier it was $9.90.

When I first moved here I couldn't get enough of Chilliz but you have to like chicken. Having eaten there 3-4 times a week for over a year I'm over it now plus it's too far from my current office. I did start to get into their beef curry with noodles though.

These articles never take into account the fact that the wages are extremely high here.

To top it off far from all mining jobs are well paid and the industry is looking at ways to bring down costs.
For those of us still on under $100,000 a year Perth is a very expensive town. I would go as far as to say a complete rip off. Very poor value for money.
