No it doesn't. She wasn't voted into office by the majority of Australians.

And she was still saying it years later. One Nation's immigration policy called for the abolition of multiculturalism with immigration restricted to a 20% skilled migrants, 20% business migrants. Family reunion to continue, but only for immediate family members and only if they are dependents.

The stated aim was zero net immigration, which is utterly ludicrous for a country which relies on immigration to grow and prosper.

If those percentages were still at those levels, I am sure there would be a lot of concern about more migrants coming in.
But they're not at those levels because our immigration system is working as intended. Hanson's dire predictions have been comprehensively debunked.

She also said, at the same time;

I must stress that at this stage that I do not consider those people from ethnic backgrounds currently living in Australia anything but first class citizens, provided of course they give this country their full, undivided loyalty.
This means nothing; it's just a sound bite she chucked out to make herself sound more palatable.

Hanson was strongly opposed to multiculturalism and said so repeatedly. You can't tell people that they're "first class citizens" whilst simultaneously demanding that they must abandon their native language and cultural heritage and submit to assimilation into white Australia. That's not how you treat "first class citizens."

Some excerpts are:

From other things that I have read, she was not against those who did want to assimilate and become a part of Australia, just against those who wanted to create their own homelands with their own original ways, but here in Australia.

Do people really disagree with everything she says ?
Glad you actually printed this speech as its the speech most people seem to refer to when talking about Pauline Hanson, most of these people have never even heard it. Me thinks they are the same people who read in the Daily Mail that Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand said something nasty about Andrew Sachs grand daughter and protested to the BBC to have them sacked!

Well I wasn't here in Paulines hayday but everyone I know,Pom and Ozzie, all say she was right.

I can't imagine anybody else being so mistreated by the establishment. For God's sake in the last election they faked pictures proported to be of her naked on the eve of the election. A couple of days after the election they were anounced to be fakes.

Can anybody think of someone else who has been so vilified for using her right to free speech.

You'd think this was an ex communist country trying to stiffle debate, jailing political opponents and when that didn't work smearing them personally.

I always find it ineresting when politicians start using personal abuse. It's normally when they realise that it's obvious that they are being seen to be wrong.

I've got a feeling some of you may not agree with my comments

I cannot stand people who play the person, play the policy or the party not the person its just a job. Too much of it these days.

Hate is a very strong word and I fail to see how I could hate someone I actually have not met. I might not like what they are saying but that is different.

Everytime this lady is in the news such vitriol, unbelievable.

Lets face it she might be good for the UK
The last thing the UK needs at this time is an Australian moron

I can't believe some of the quotes you decided to use from her speech, how can you actually think that those are good things????? To say that 90% of Australians agree with her is the biggest load of CRAP I have ever heard!!!!!! More like 90% of the red necks she associated with! Like I said before, that speech is shameful and I am sooooo happy that most Australians disagree completely with anything that comes out of that woman's mouth. :thumb down:
The problem is when some people disagree with EVERYTHING that a person says. It makes me wonder why ?

Do they just work of a first impression and ignore what is actually said, or do they really listen and genuinely disagree with it all?

If they genuinely disagree then OK, everyone is entitled to an opinion, whether right or wrong.
However I don't disagree with EVERYTHING she said, just some of the things.

But I also agree with a few things. Not sure I would have ever have voted for her though.

A Poll on Yahoo has 55% agreeing with her
Today's Poll
Do you agree with Pauline Hanson?
Yes 55%
No 45%
But........ do we agree with what ? That she should leave ? That Australia has gone down hill ? That she made good fish and Chips ?
The question is a tad ambiguous...

l think she picked on the wrong targets mostly Chinese and Vietnamese they are not the ones that cause trouble, you don't see Chinese immigrants getting arrested for planning terrorist attacks in Australia. Most of our trade is with China without China OZ would be banana republic.

OK It's just someone said her thinking was protestant but clearly the IRA were the ones who were not happy with the situation and its 'foreigners' in its land and trying to reclaim it for themselves etc so I thought it was a strange comment to make since the IRA (Catholics mainly) seemed more driven on that issue.

Having said that the Protestants were generally trying to further their ambitions through political and non violent means like pauline hanson so maybe thinking like a protestant is a compliment.

weird.

Anyway she's a total bogan and I think her policies were wrong, however... I respect her for standing up for what she believes in, and I think she seems like a nice enough person if you take away her 'backward' views.

She does have a few points in regards to immigration and keeping an eye on it and trying to make sure we keep Australia a nice country. We do need immigration though and we are a nation of immigrants, so as long as we do it right it's all good!

She did go against the official line of the time though.
That was why I placed the word "popular" in italics. I wonder how many people out there secretly admire her values but choose to nail their colours to the more politically-correct flag because it's unprovocative and conformist.
