Is your partner's nephew not able to approach his own parents? Just wondering if they would feel usurped if he went to you and not them. Also, are they aware that there's a suspected addiction? Must admit that I'd want to know if it were my son. Just a thought.

Didnt lend money, partner and son both very against it, for good reason it seems.
I had a conversation with nephew, he IS involved in this poker thing, and thinks he can make a living from some US poker website
FFS pardon my language, but what on earth can he be thinking
. Blind crazy belief, really thinks it can be replace having a job, some brainwashing crazy stuff going on here, this is a smart, normal kid, not from great home but nothing too odd. Anyway, reckons hes going on some trip to Asia to one of the Casinos, paid for by them
already been to Sydney paid for by them, it sounds like some bloody cult, brainwashed, crazy, nuts... Apparently quite common, son reckons loads of kids this age are into it. The younger two reckon kids at school are into it too, but it cant be the same thing, nephew is using real money, son reckons hes put 30 grand thorough. His parents? someone asked, the Dad would probably slap him on the back and say go for it
I assume paying his rent would only help feed the habit, not very nice to think what happens now though

Partners nephew has just asked for a small loan, OK kid and recently he had some probs so I said 'if you ever need any help.... meaning talking really, however..
Anyway he needs money to pay his rent, said hes had a run of big bills blah blah...
However my eldest son reckons hes into online poker in a big way and the erm 'rent' money would probably go the same way.
Nice kid, not so nice home, has had some probs, thinking could give him a cheque to rental agency..
But am I doing him any favours if he really has some poker problem. Thinking of saying NO, but then suppose it is for rent and he goes and does something stupid to get the money or gets chucked out of the rental.

f nephew is an adult then surely he should be responsible for paying his own rent?
I agree with comments about directly to rental agency. Maybe also sit down and help him with a budget etc

However, casino wants to get kids hooked. Paying for a plane ticket is no big deal given that they will reap years of rewards from that person once they're hooked.
Some people have to learn the hard way.
Good luck - and I suggest you tell his parents, pronto!

Alarm bells should be ringing very loudly that side! The kid clearly has no idea what he could end up getting into. Drug trafficking to "pay off" debt comes to mind and once he's in Asia they can intimidate him and have him over a barrel. Wise intervention is needed very fast. I'm sorry if this panics you but you need to know.
