any way we won the Olympics (as good as) and Australia came 80th or something and spat the dummy.

Over time, there isn't always much difference. Here's a chart of the two currencies' performance against the USD over the past five years. (Never mind the "1953" mentioned; the chart can be adjusted for whatever period you want. Brexit knocked the GBP down quite a bit, but it will recover in due course.
