Perhaps he could take a couple of Slap n Chops to deal with the exposed rods too?

I don't know why they haven't though of this, I though the Japanese were supposed to be ingenious.

I wonder how many of these engineers will be committing ritual suicide when the nuclear emergency is over?

The Register is often satirical. It's hard sometimes to tell whether they're taking the piss out of one side or the other. Or possibly both.

Construction would take 15-20 years, and provide a valuable boost to Japan's economy. The infill could then be exported to the maldives to mitigate the effects of rising sea levels.

And you've got a ready made trench to bury the waste in later.

I like it, these Jap nuclear engineers need all the help they can get. Maybe we should contact them?

I'm not keen on the working conditions to be honest.

You could do it via video link. Sit at home, beer in hand, feet in pool, giving advice. Sounds ideal for you.

Unfortunately I have an interview to prepare for, the Armchair Atomic Agony Aunt post will have to remain empty.

No Red Adair to come to the rescue dammit.

I was sold on this Nuclear stuff... Now I realise it wont stand a huge catastrophe I'm not so sure. Looks like a China Syndrome type reaction would be the worst case scenario here, where the core melts into water table and explodes, sending radioactive debris into the atmosphere. Hopefully that's not on fates agenda.

Personally right now, I'm slightly more nervous about the prospects of a major quake in the US. How long do these Quake Cycles take ? All of this isn't making me confident about 2012.

Anchorage or Vancouver next in the firing line.

Oooh a real interview, for a real job? Good luck on that one :fingerscrossed: (well, if you want the job that is).

I wonder how far off-shore it was? ...

According to latest reports the crew exposed were in rescue helicopters just outside of Sendai ... this has to be (relatively) better than being on the ship ...

Ta, don't really want to hijack this thread with my minor personal news ... must be a first. ;)

Looks like it is about to get a lot worse.

The wind is due to start turning onshore soon (in 7 hours), and they appear to have lost control of cooling, with a real explosion in reactor 2 (eg not the same as 1 or 3). Add to that the spent fuel ponds are at risk if everyone has to evacuate because the the breach in containment in No.2.

It's officially hitting 'oh shit' levels now.

Good thing that this forum has so many experts on hand.

edit - the BBC live feed is not good reading:

0309: Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano says: "Now we are talking about levels that can impact human health. I would like all of you to embrace this information calmly. These are readings taken near the area where we believe that the release of radioactive substances is occurring. The further away you get from the power plant or reactor the value should go down".
0306: Winds over the stricken nuclear plant are blowing slowly towards the Kanto region, which includes Tokyo, Reuters reports.
0303: Radiation is 400 times the annual legal limit near Fukushima's reactor 3, the Kyodo news agency reports.
0256: Apologies for the delay with updating - this was due to technical problems.
0241: And Mr Kan also confirms earlier reports that a fire has broken out at Fukushima's reactor 4.
