Were I to do it all over again, and frankly I would not bother as its just an ongoing expense and work for what it a large garden ornament for us (no kids), I would go fibreglass. Less build pain, more attractive in finish to my mind as well.
I went concrete and honestly regret it.

We ended up buying a flexi pipe to use to run off water when needed.

didn't get it put in ourselves it was the previous owners and they went for fibreglass which is fine, I'm happy enough with it. I will say though you will love it in the summer, don't care what anyone says about it being an ornament, waste of money etc if you've got kids you'll probably use it every day in the summer, ours were hardly out of it last! Even after the kids had gone to bed hubby and I would head out to the pool with a beer before bed
great for cooling you down so you get a good sleep. We've only one aircon unit in the whole house so for us it's been priceless

We are still in the UK, still trying to make up our minds whether coming to the Gold Coast is the right thing for us. One of my MUST HAVE's in coming is a pool and the weather to use it. Here's a silly question though - can you us the pool at night without being totally bothered by mosquitos and insects? Does anyone have those 'florida rooms' where you have netting that encloses the pool and tables etc? Its just I see myself having parties and people over but I am worried that I've got it wrong and all that sun setting early and mozzies means that actually people don't do the whole outside at night time thing....?

Completely agree! You have young kids Sc & they will make great use of it, very worthwhile investment imo.
Just watch out for pebbledash. My first trip to ED in Aus was with eldest who got a tiny pebble wedged up a firnger nail....very painful apparently!
Have fun

Now that our kids have grown up, We'll settle for the more refined spa / jacuzzi option -sitting drinking sundowners in warmer water.

Concrete one for me. Looks better IMHO and you can mould it to any shape you want. Good luck mate

I'm seriously considering just that, an enclosure for the outside deck but trying to find a trades to actually do it for a price that does not involve a contract for my firstborn seems to be a sticking point. They are not commonplace and I have never seen one myself here. Consider them more unusual than the norm.

Have you seen a concrete pool after 25 years.
Our fiberglass is about 30 years old and has started leaking. We have had both types and find the fiberglass nicer on the feet.
We got a heat pump for the pool when we moved in and it's fab, much better then the solar heating we had at the old place, thats another advantage with fiberglass doesn't crack if your heat it too quickly. I would def go for the heating, your spending all that on the pool might as well spend a little more to double the usage

That's what we're going for. After three years here and dithering about whether to put a pool in for the whole time, the idea has totally lost its appeal. The longer I stay here the more I acclimatise the 'cooler' the weather seems (year round) the less likely I am to strip down to my budgies.
