My brain will explode Nz or Oz Help!!!!!!
My other half has recently been on a recce to Nz and Oz, He went to Blenheim nz loved it wide open spaces, beautiful scenery, very family friendly and definite ethos about work to live not live to work and would work shorter days with no commute more time with the kids (as works really hard here and we see too little of him), got a job offer and very distant family there who helped sooooo much and would if we moved got a great gut feeling abut the place!! down side wages rubbish cost of living a little high. Went to Adelaide not for us so no probs.
Then went to Melbourne also loved it for very different reasons, everything you could need on your doorstep, great shops, affordable housing on new build sites looked at point cook and sanctuary lakes sooo impressed. But large built up city ?more keeping up with the jones and after talking to a few people they all seemed to work long hours about 60hrs a week on average which was expected by employers so less time with kids and half way around the world so not a big a social network with three kids 4 and under.......... Not got any of those rose tinted specs on and knew there would be pro's and con's whatever the decision but the trouble is making one... One day we do our pro's and con's list and say yes NZ definitely for us and no sooner have we uttered the words it follows by well Melbourne has got loads going for it what about when the kids are older will the open space and outdoor life be better than theater, shopping and good restaurants etc... Has anyone else been through a similar experience after a recce or is it just us? I do think I will go mad before long I only told a friend today 'no we have definitely decided it's NZ' and now I write this any thought's may be very helpful!!!! cheers lisa |

Maybe you should look at moving to one or the other and if you don't like it then you can always go to the other place. Look into how easy/hard it is to move from Oz to NZ and vice versa. I know it's not an ideal situation, but it's going to be easier to move here as opposed to from the UK if you do decide to go that way. Good luck whatever you decide. :) |
Re: My brain will explode Nz or Oz Help!!!!!!
Wherever you move to, it doesn't have to be forever. Look on it as an experience. Never been to either but I would imagine they are totally different so you have to think sensibly - do you go out and about city wise now? Are you country people? Ask yourselves those sorts of questions. Not trying to teach granny to suck eggs but you can get caught up in the excitement of a new life when in reality you will just be living your old lives in a new place.

Also, if you are willing to be some way from the city, there are plenty of open spaces and some beautiful ones at that.

Re: My brain will explode Nz or Oz Help!!!!!!
hi there.
we moved to nz in feb2007 and are now moving to oz in the new year. nz in the winter is a cold place to live, the houses have no double glazing or central heating, i have never been in such a cold house as here, even tho its only 7 years old. the utilities here are very expensive and the wages low. the schooling is terrible unless you pay for a good school, you even have to pay for a bad schools tho. doctors and dentists are expensive, did i say wages are low, interest rates are high, as are now the house prices to buy and rent. to get out of nz it is hellish expensive. internal flights and trains are expensive and the ferry between the 2 islands is expensive. saying all that nz is the most beautiful country i have been to, but my health and sanity and kids education are more important than scenery. sorry to be so negative, please do a lot of research bfore making the plunge as it is costing nearly $30,000 to move to oz from nz. good luck and im sure you will do whats right for you all. darren |

Thats besides the point... if the OP's brain needs a rest. NZ is the go, If they want to earn money at a faster rate, for a future relaxed lifestyle, then Melbournes the go. |
Re: My brain will explode Nz or Oz Help!!!!!!
There are 40,000 kiwis moving to oz each year and not so many the other way. There must be a reason for that. Clue - the answer is $$$

Yeah, here's why: An electrical engineer in WA or Qld can earn AUD150-250k (and probably more). An electrical engineer in NZ will earn NZD60-120k (maybe a bit more if lucky). |
Re: My brain will explode Nz or Oz Help!!!!!!
I was about to make that point myself, and the weather in Oz is so much better. It woud be a shame to be stuck indoors in a kiwi winter when you can lap it up in Oz.

its all well and good having the open space in nz, (which you can have in regional oz), but what about when the kids are older and there are no opportunities for them career wise. australia is warmer bigger and more opportunity with a far better education. once your here in nz its hard to get out as no one can afford to. darren ] |

As a 'country dweller' Oz, there was plenty going on for families and couples alike. We certainly never suffered for the lack of social stuff to do. In fact, the choice was huge ... sports clubs and their socials, nights out, the pub, good restaurants, the movies up the road, parties etc. We don't all take basket weaving classes when we live there. Also, possibly not wise to compare village life in UK to elsewhere. UK's so compact, there's a town near every village for those wanting more... Not so in NZ |

Not so in NZ This link to the particular episode of "build a new life" really took the biscuit, and there are varying degrees of stupidty shown on other episodes... Living the way they were previously, they could have been retired within 8 years... Nope but they decide to give drudgery and isolation a go................ The Irish episode. Whats wrong with working for a target and then retiring early ? or being where the money is. http://homes.five.tv/jsp/5hmain.jsp?...ction=Features |

http://homes.five.tv/jsp/5hmain.jsp?...ction=Features A half hour or hour long show doesn't reflect anything. It's also down to how stupid they want you to look with the editing. Once filmed you've got no control of how you appear in front of millions of people! Producers rub their hands at people's willingness to be filmed. And this proves my point: 'The move comes from Rebecca's belief that she was born in the wrong era and her dream to return to a way of life that was common 100 years ago.' She's nuts... they're all nuts. They were nuts before the filming started... just think what they did to them in the editing stage! A producer's wet dream. AND it's Channel 5. And then on the other hand, my dear, <rolls piece of straw around mouth and leans on spade> it's not your dream, but it might be theirs. ;) |

Does that happen outside of Surrey then ?:p My point in bringing this up, is there are 1000's of viewers of these shows searching for stuff that doesn't exist. No wonder so many get to Aussie and then become disallussioned when they realise...they've got to work, and there are similar responsbilities and ties and hassles. Another point, do you think it's harder to move from London or to London and why ? To cut short your musings over this question. Of course London is harder to move to it's far more expensive, ergo comfortably based Londoners have far more financial clout and hence choice than most people in the UK. They maybe on the treadmill but they have far more options than anyone else. To come back to this thread... NZ life, maybe ok for some, but it will be hard to get out of once your stuck in it, mostly because of financial reasons. With Melbourne, or other Aussie cities you have far more capacity to change your life. |
Re: My brain will explode Nz or Oz Help!!!!!!
I am in the privileged position of actually having lived in both countries. NZ 2yrs, Aus nearly 5yrs.
In my opinion, where you will settle best is entirely down to your personality type and how you prefer to live your lifestyle. For me NZ is far far more beautiful scenery wise than Australia ever could be. It truly is stunning. There's always a BUT though isnt there? I have never been so bored in my life! After 6mths of looking at ebdless postcard secenery i was over it and there was little else left that made me want to stay there. I learned that i was not craving the quiet life as much as i thought i did. If you enjoy solitude, isolation and living in a time warp and enjoy the rugged lifestyle as opposed to the more modern urban life then go for it as it may well suit you, but be aware that as others have said, wages are low, good and services very expensive. I remember a trip to the GP costing me $60 Australia does have a better infastructure and better prospects and also gives you more options as to the kind of lifestyle you may wish to choose. |

this is making a rather large presumption that everyone who moves away from London is loaded, which is completely incorrect. Not everyone has money, not everyone has a blinding job and not everyone has sold a property because they rent. I moved from London with not much money... That, my friend, depends on what you want out of life, and what you're going to be doing once there doesn't it! What you want isn't everyone's dream and vice versa. I did add the proviso "comfortably based" Londoners, and if you look very closely at my posts, It's not I making the assumptions. I'm talking about the people that watch these shows and buy the dream. Lets make this clear, I'm gobsmacked that people can actually beleive it, buy it and actually live it, as potrayed in these shows. You make a great point with the paragraph, 'that depends on what you want out of life', and one I totally concur with. All migrants have one great thing going for them, they are trying to better themselves and their situation. Just dont whinge about it, if you've bought a false dream. |

We moved out to get fresh air and good schooling for our first daughter when she was one. We moved to Buckinghamshire... The first night, after moving from Ealing and the delights of the Picadilly line commute, when Jess had gone to bed, we went outside and looked up into the sky... the stars were incredible. Took our breath away. It was so quiet too. Sometimes a change is as good as a rest... I loved living in London but having had the countryside, I'm not sure I'd move back. My dream here? A property out in the outback, completely self sufficient... a few horses and running a business ... I never thought I'd want that out of life until I touched on it by moving from London to the country. It's always good to try, and I completely agree, moaning about choices that haven't worked for you is a waste of energy. Better to put that energy into doing something other. :) |

Hi!
Only my opinion, but, if you have any doubts, I'd try Melbourne first. It's a beautiful city, has plenty to do, and plenty to offer. New Zealand is very beautiful, but it's also very boring, and very isolated, and VERY long drives between one town and another. I'd rather go back to Scotland than go live in NZ. Same beautiful scenery, just shorter drives to see it. As I said, only my opinion. Maggie ;)

We only ended up in Brisbane because OH was offered a job we couldn't afford to turn down. I wouldn't like to end up here permanently, but it's good for us for the moment. Sydney is too, too busy for us. We've been down to visit relatives there. But Melbourne is beautiful, been down there to visit friends, and has loads to do whatever age you are. Again, I'd say that NZ is very isolated, and very expensive, from what we saw, and from what No. 1 Son says. He lives 30 minutes outside Wellington at the moment. If you're used to "busy", I'd definately choose Melbourne over anywhere in NZ. Again, this is only MY opinion. All the best for whatever decision you make, Maggie ;) |
Re: My brain will explode Nz or Oz Help!!!!!!
We lived and worked in Welly for a few months. It was grey, windy and parochial. We had 3 earthquakes (rattle the shelves sort) and there will be a bigger one some day - the geology is for real.
We thought it would be just the place for us - but turned down permanent job offers after 3 months. It's too detached from the world. It IS a photographer's paradise. We love Oz. |
