For what it's worth, Melbourne is a better starting point, (in my opinion), than anywhere else in Australia.
We only ended up in Brisbane because OH was offered a job we couldn't afford to turn down. I wouldn't like to end up here permanently, but it's good for us for the moment. Sydney is too, too busy for us. We've been down to visit relatives there. But Melbourne is beautiful, been down there to visit friends, and has loads to do whatever age you are. Again, I'd say that NZ is very isolated, and very expensive, from what we saw, and from what No. 1 Son says. He lives 30 minutes outside Wellington at the moment. If you're used to "busy", I'd definately choose Melbourne over anywhere in NZ. Again, this is only MY opinion. All the best for whatever decision you make, Maggie ;) |

Do you want your kids to grow up with a NZ icksint??????

Re: My brain will explode Nz or Oz Help!!!!!!
Do you have to make the decision now? Can you not move over, spend a couple of weeks in Mellie then go to NZ and see the set up there? It's a big ask to decide when you're 12,000 miles away. We thought we knew where we were going to settle and ended up 40 minutes away. That's nothing compared to your decision but if we'd decided on the first place, we'd have been so unhappy.

Thanks for that I think so too if I am totally honest but GOT to ask how long has No 1 son been in Wellington and is he enjoying it???
No 1 Son would have rather stayed in Lake Wanaka, but the NZs couldn't wrap their head around the fact that "Computer Geeks" can work remotely. He moved to Wellington solely because work prospects were better there. He has V high security clearance and works on specialist stuff, and would earn more here in Oz, but couldn't handle the heat. He loved Wanaka, he loves where he is outside of Wellington, BUT, he is a country boy at heart. He grew up in the country in Yorkshire and Scotland and that's how he likes to live now. Personally, I don't think I could handle it, but I am a city girl at heart. Again, I'd advise, start off in a bigger, "more to offer" place. After 3 years in NZ you will become a citizen and be able to live, work, and buy property in Oz. Depending on your visa, given recent changes, you will become in citizen in Oz, in either 2, or 5 years, and have the same priviledges in NZ. I'd personally rather spend my time in Oz. It's a bigger country, has more to see, more variations/permutations of things to do. The one thing you have to remember is, this is YOUR life, you have to make the decisions that are best, (at the time you make them), for your own family. What Pollyanna says is right. You have to go with your own gut feeling. The rest of us are here. We're making the most of the decisions we've made. It's a tough one, but only you can decide for yourself. All the very best, Maggie ;) |

Totally agree with the rest of what you say. :) I don't really like confrontation, (unless it's on the internet where nobody knows me!!!) so I just accepted what she had said. I read a post the other day by someone who was saying that they'd stopped responding to threads on the immigration part of the site because so many things had changed. I suppose we can only help in few situations. I would have loved to have known of this site when we were going through the immigration hell. OOOOppss, Am I allowed to say H***. My biggest problem, is that I am so very opinionated that every time I post, I duck down under the parapet and wait for the slagging to begin. Hardest thing for me to take is that in my "real" life in Scotland, I BOSSED everyone around no matter who they were. (They allowed this because I was so VERY senior, and (obviously) f@@@@@n demented) Maggie ;) |

There are lots of people who really haven't got the first idea about these things. :D I don't really like confrontation, (unless it's on the internet where nobody knows me!!!) so I just accepted what she had said. Maybe for a more balanced view you should post the question on the NZ forum too :)

In my opinion, where you will settle best is entirely down to your personality type and how you prefer to live your lifestyle. For me NZ is far far more beautiful scenery wise than Australia ever could be. It truly is stunning. There's always a BUT though isnt there? I have never been so bored in my life! After 6mths of looking at ebdless postcard secenery i was over it and there was little else left that made me want to stay there. I learned that i was not craving the quiet life as much as i thought i did. If you enjoy solitude, isolation and living in a time warp and enjoy the rugged lifestyle as opposed to the more modern urban life then go for it as it may well suit you, but be aware that as others have said, wages are low, good and services very expensive. I remember a trip to the GP costing me $60 Australia does have a better infastructure and better prospects and also gives you more options as to the kind of lifestyle you may wish to choose. BTW...Best remind the OP of this post... It's the most relevant of the thread, and why I went on a convoluted path re Lifestyle shows on Ireland. |
Re: My brain will explode Nz or Oz Help!!!!!!
Thanks for all your replies some very helpful comments and opinions, we are tending to sway now towards Melbourne for many reasons but still not 100%. Think as we are overloaded with info at the Mo and are going to concentrate on Christmas and digest all our research and if we can not decided by the stroke of midnight on new years eve we are flipping that old coin and going with it!!! After all the problem we have is deciding between two places my husband really love..................so it's total disaster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
