Did you say it was wrapped up in a receipt ? if it was it would have the time etc & the name of the person who was on the till. Dont know if it would be any help in tracing them, but just a thought !

FWIW I'd handed it in - something similar happened to me with a purse and you can bask in the reflected glory of knowing you done right.

all I know is I lost a wallet with $200 in it at a time when I couldnt afford to lose $200 (not that any time is a good time to lose money..) and I dont know what I would have done if it hadnt been handed in! I suppose you need to put yourself in the other persons shoes..

Hey your not gonna believe it but out shopping in oz today only dropped $400 in me shopping trolley it was about 3pm just b4 the kids finished school no ones heard of anyone finding it if so tell em to spend it once you hand it in anywhere it will no doubt belong to whom ever you give it to it will make the person who lost it more carefull next time enjoy your shopping spree

Personally, I'd take it to the police, then tell the store that if anyone reports "something" they lost in the store yesterday that they should contact the police.
