Missing UK food

Normally I'm fine and don't miss any, but recently have had a hankering for pork sausages (had some from the local butcher but they weren't nice) and smoked bacon. Curries I tend to try to make myself.
Morrisons short crust steak and ale pies, and pork pies....?

99% of bacon in Queensland is smoked (vile stuff!)

Pork pies are awfully expensive here - we're going to have a crack at making our own soon as it isn't too difficult according to the recipe we have.

Where are you living in Australia? People might be able to give you some pointers on where to get stuff.

They do, in some coles branches now. only been there for about the last 8-9 months though, and as I said the majority of bacon in Queensland is smoked, to varying extents. Trust me, I've bought most of it and tried it and it wasn't till the middle of last year that Coles came up trumps. I actually found it in adelaide first, Coles here got it soon after.

Coles have some decent sausages now too  Pork with apple and cider, cumberland, and a couple of others. Can't remember the name of the range offhand but they are a gourmet-type thing.

I quite like the tins of Salmon and Mackeral with flavours.
I've moved on from the tuna.

Onwards and upwards.

As for pork sausages, you can buy them here. I bought a pack over 10 years ago, in fact, when for some reason, people were a bit glum about it.

Scouse won't even look at an Aussie snagger. He suffers the pork ones from the British Sausage Company (you buy them in packs in the Coles meat section), but try to give him an Aussie beef barbeque one and you risk death

I think British food is awful, I don't know how or why it's quite so miserable but clearly...the results speak for themselves.

There are many things we are great at from inventing the telly to building supersonic airliners, and much more...however culinary skills should definitely be singled out as an area for improvement.

To be fair British food has greatly improved in the last 20 years. Back in the 90's it was pretty shite but now its damn good and in many respects trumps the Aussie stuff which has pretty much remained the same in the past 20 years

P@ssing my self laughing. You do know that the UK has more michelin stars than france?
You do know that even the NY Times food writers now spend half their year in the UK because it is a world culinary capital?
You have heard of restaurants such as Dining at Heston?
You do know that chefs from all over the world are clambering for UK produce?

At the same time you get Oz. A parma for $50 please

Does anyone know if the Branston Brown sauce is available in Australia?

Our Range | Bring Out The Branston

I asked at one of those British food retailers and they hadn't heard of it, only the HP sauce or Branston pickle. HP lost it's appeal to me when they changed the recipe & moved production to Holland. Branston uses (if not very similar) the original HP recipe.

There are decent restaurants everywhere if you don't live in woop woop.
I like pub food in both Aus and UK - you should never pay 50 bucks for a parma - and you should be getting a pot with it, the whole point is that it hits the spot nicely.

It's all about mood. Sometimes I want a massive steak with chips, often a parma or some salmon. Not a big fan of UK style 'roast' dinners with trimmings - I can make that at home.

I noticed Twiglets in my local Woolies foreign foods section a while back and now I'm seriously addicted. I think I might have to get someone to post me a crate from back home - it would be cheaper!
Trying to describe them to Aussies is funny too - looks like a twig but tastes of Marmite/Vegemite ....

It's astonishing the price some places charge, and the rorts they have going. I was at a pub in Lorne a few years ago during holiday season. The Parma & Chips is their restaurant/bistro was around $40, where the same could be ordered as a 'counter meal' in the main bar for $25.

On the way back from the Prom I paid less than market rates for a gigantic steak.
Plus good beer on tap.

If I spot something I won't pay for it is dismissed never to trouble me again.

$12 for rump and chips at the local hotel on Thursdays. 3 meals and a bottle of house red - $58. Bargain

$14 parmy and chips down the hill mid-week
$16 steak and chips and a beer on Thursdays
$4.90 Heineken pints

All good

Most astonishing lunch today, ordered a crispy taco from mad mex. One teaspoon of meat and get this! 7 black beans. Even with lettuce and tomato it was only half full. $4. Ridiculous.

Best value meals I know of in AU is the Vietnamese restaurants in some very not fashionable suburbs near where we rent in melb. $9 for main, side and tea. Love the food markets too, same stuff they sell in the trendy suburbs for half the price.

Most of the time many people complain about portions being too big!

That is normally how it works. There is no need to pay top dollar for pub food - unless you are a tourist. There is a time and place to pay top dollar in a place of your choosing and on your own timing.

I have paid more for steak and chips, for example, but I am paying for location, ambience, service and more so, an experience.

The good steadfast, suburban, and provincial Englanders and obsessive dullards that they be .;) A life centered around
the trivial and commonplace.

No wonder they moved to Australia - they thought those same lives would be fixed.
(ho ho).

It's ok - I am only pulling a leg.

Depends. There are plenty of those restaurants styled around nouvelle cuisine (which is essentially 70s/80s style cooking) and the subsequent gastropub/lounge trend of the 90's and even molecular gastronomy (which was trendy in about the same era but lingered into the early naughties) never got off the ground here. You'll see lots of replication and variation on those classic themes as well, there are numerous celeb associated restaurants with plenty of Michelin stars rehashing those ideas to death.

However if you are looking for something more original, contemporary, imaginative or with providence I'm afraid it is still quite difficult to find...that lightning in a bottle.
