Thumbs up Melbourne is Australia's top holiday destination

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/mel...-1225872227984

MELBOURNE has overtaken the Gold Coast as the most popular destination for a domestic holiday, new research has found.
While a year ago the two cities were equally popular, Melbourne's popularity has been rising since that time and the Gold Coast's has been falling.

The Roy Morgan Research study found 21 per cent of Australians would like to take a holiday in Melbourne in the next two years - up two per cent from last March.

At the same time the number of people who elected the Gold Coast dropped three per cent to 19 per cent.

Yay for Melbourne!

Have to say I'd agree. I love Melbourne, have always liked spending time there, while the Gold Coast in general is just a bit too brash for me. Melbourne reminds me of places like Brighton, a sort of genteel charm, if a bit aged.

Of course it all depends what you're looking for in a holiday, but myself and the OH found Melbourne to be too much effort. It smacked of trying too hard to be cool and arty and sophisticated. There were certainly some very nice bits but by the third day there we were making bets on how many statues/bits of street art/randon sculptures we could count in the smallest space.

Trouble with living here is, when you visit elsewhere within Aus, it can work out to be disappointing, especially when it comes to choice.

Had a great holiday last year, spent 3 weeks with my Wife locally, we went out everyday just about, starting with walks around Princess park or Royal Park, ate out at least 3-4 times a week and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

Still not sure what we are going to do in August this year..... Could be a last minute Cruise, Thailand, Gold Coast or just Melbourne. Thing is it wont be that disappointing if we dont end up going anywhere, after last years experience, as long as we go out a lot. Depends on our Tax Cheque actually. The Kids have lots of music auditions in August, so it may be here again.

Off there on sunday birthday gift to myself.

I am hoping its at its grey graffita gloomy grotty gangland best I love the city side of it, it had better not be sunny when its grey there I can almost pretend I am in a small UK city

Shops there are probably the best for what OZ has to offer too. I feel the need for shoes.

Anything great on there at the moment, exhibitions etc??

Its OH's 40th birthday at the end of September, so we're having a long weekend in Melbourne.

Any suggestions of reasonable hotels? Things to do and see?

For my 40th, we had a long weekend in Sydney (we were in Qld at the time) and stayed at the Novotel on Darling Harbour - so something similarly priced/positioned would be magnifique

I know, I don't ask for much.

Sunday is indeed forecast to be average, 16 degrees and showers. If you are staying until Monday it will unfortunately be back to sunny and 19 degrees.

I believe there is an exhibition of artefacts from the Titanic on at the moment.

Absolutely! Never been to the GC but it doesn't sound like my cup of tea. I love Melbourne for the reasons you've given, and more.

We're driving down to Melb in the October school holidays, down the coast road. Given where I live right now, the coast road's going to have to be fairly attractive to better my current environs and given that I work in Sydney I hope to give a full, frank and honest opinion of the place at that time.
