Making friends in Perth
Have just moved to Perth with work and am finding it really difficult to fit in
Any tips on meeting people? I have lived in most major world cities but find people here really insular.

There are lots of people who live near or in the city. What do you like to do? Are you male or female? Age?
There will probably be a meetup in King's Park in the not-too-distant future. Keep an eye on the meet up section for details.

Incidentally, I have made one 'friend' since arriving here. After me making a lot of effort to keep in contact, he barely returns calls or keeps in touch. I really can't be arsed with 'friends' like that.
Just my two cents. Other people here have completely different experiences, I'm sure.

I've been in Perth for over two years and I still find it hard to fit in. I hate generalising but I find the people here to be polite but hardly welcoming. they will smile and wish you good day but it seems to me that they are just not interested in you. They "have enough friends already thank you very much". Have you noticed that eyes-glazed-over look they have when you respond to their question of, "How's it going"? I have likened this place to Stepford in past. I see no reason to change my opinion.

Have similar problem with the 'natives' .... but it is understandable as they grew up/went to school and have lived here (or in Australia) all of their lives... AND they have their family here and at my age (40) they have little need to make an effort to expand their social network, unless of course you are of some use to them.... then they want to know, believe me!

i wonder how many while still in the uk went out of their way to make new arrivals feel welcome and make "proper" friends with them?
as a person who moved around quite a bit it was just as difficult getting to know people in the uk as it is here - you just have to put yourself out there, make the effort and if you get a few knockbacks dust yourself off and try again.
no-one's going to knock on your door and ask if you want to be their friend (they might invite you to a memorial service about jesus though, like's just happened to me )
