The link I posted is to some software I've seen used in the past and it did get back access to *some* files. It's about your only option now by the sound of it.
The moral of the story by the way, especially for pictures, is store them somewhere online in places like Photobucket... and make sure you store them in two places if they are really important to you.

And you didn't happen to have them on a photo cd or something? Just straight to your hard drive?
www.flickr.com is good for photo storage. Better imo than PB.
If you don't have backup and can't recover, then you'll have to kiss them goodbye, Donna, sorry to say.
Did you email any out to people? Perhaps people can mail you them back? Amazing what pics people keep.

Really sorry to hear this but as you now know the moral is to back-up before doing anything to a computer. However, I would have thought if he was an IT person he would have said this to you before starting or at least have brought an external hard-drive round to dump the stuff onto. It's drummed into IT people to back-up, back-up, back-up!
There are companies who can retrieve stuff from hard-drives which have had all sorts done to them (they're called forensic data companies and work for the police etc) but I guess this would be very expensive.
As the OP said, your Mum's and rellies must have pics of the kids which can fill in your gaps.
All our print photos are still in the UK in a friends loft as we couldn't bear to ship them twice if we didn't stay! However, I now want them here as it's part of our history but it would be costly to ship them alone and I didn't have time to start scanning them whilst I was back. Something I need to sort out next visit!
Hope you can retrieve some of them!

Re: lost 14yrs worth of photos
My hard drive died a few weeks ago and I never backed anything up, I took it to a specialist IT repair shop and they recovered all my photos () and replaced the hard drive all for $200, it took them about 4 days to get all my files off the broken one, they said it was pretty knackered... but it might be worth you taking it to someone else? They might be able to do something the guy from your hubbies work can't?
This reminds me... I really need to back my files up... most are on facebook though... are yours? You could get them off there?

It's usually easier to get files off a broken disk than a formatted one... and the more you write to the newly formatted disk the less chance you have of recovering anything off it.
