Sorry to read that things have been so tough. It's not easy up here at the moment is it. I'd think about relocating if YoungSOB weren't so settled at school - maybe in a year or so before she starts high school.

It's madness really and it seems there are many very short-sighted employers who can't offset the benefits of a more shall we say mature job applicant (I mean old of course :rofl: ) against the cheaper junior. Overlooking of course the fact that the younger applicant will of course not bring the wisdom of experience, and they will be less likely to stay for a sustained period of time.

Over and above my concerns for my own job situation, I do wonder what the future would hold career-wise for my girly when she's older if we stay in Cairns. I so don't like being a responsible adult or perhaps more accurately an adult with responsibilties :rofl:

In the 9 years we've been here there have been so many major projects announced that were going to change the face of the place.

Hub for imports and exports to PNG, Disney style theme park, dual carriageway to Kuranda, port expansion, water park, 2 new town centres North and South, government departments based here, direct flight links to India, entertainment precinct, light rail system etc.

Not one of these projects have come to fruition apart from the PNG one which lasted about 2 months and is now a dead duck. Probably the same fate will befall the Yorkeys Knob Casino resort "planned" by the billionaire from China.

Instead we've seen a host of bankruptcies including the largest 4 building companies and a major exodus of businesses departing Cairns and relocating South. Someone told me the other day how many commercial properties were now empty across Cairns and it was a ridiculous figure - something like 25% I think.

There isn't a lot left outside of tourism and sugar cane and I just can't believe how both state and federal governments still entice people to move here. There's just no work.

Remember all the UK nurses they brought over? I think more than half went back to the UK again. One major reason was their spouses couldn't find work.

In the last 1 month my wife, my son and 3 friends have all been made redundant and they all worked for different industries and companies so where does it end?

Sucks my friend, big time:(. On the other end of the scale, a friend who moved there in 2000 is making enough to do a month in the UK every other year and the other years massive holidays like the one they've just come back from which was LA, Vegas, Florida, Hawaii with as many expensive side trips as they could fit in. Plastered all over FB. To read her and her friends comments, there's no negatives in Cairns at all. Pisses me off a lot.

Yes; exactly where is to be decided but at the moment it looks like the Redcliffe Peninsula or somewhere on the Sunshine Coast.
