I 2nd the Nexus 7. Fab thing. Only downside (for me) is no external storage other than cloud storage, but internet, apps, games, books etc, all good.

Plenty of ways you can use it for control as well. Plus a Bluetooth keyboard makes it possible to use as a 'notebook' for on the go.

$1 USB OTG cable, a free app, and your favourite media storage and you can have as much external storage as you want.

Put it this way, the Nexus 7 is what the mini ipad was trying to copy.

Problem for them was, to really compete they would have had to put an axe to their price hierarchy and profit margins - hence why the prices are so out of whack.

Personally, there is nothing that would tempt me into that apple camp, but your youngest maybe all about the fashion state of apple's walled garden...
