Anyone own a Kindle (latest generation)?

Do you rate it? I really wan't one for allowing me to carry around all of my professional/work related books, without having to tow the bookshelf behind the car...

Thankoooo.

Re: Kindle

I don't have a Kindle but I do have an iPad and the Kindle app

Bought my first book at the weekend online - a whole 2.49 sterling! Loving it - I'm a lover of books and thought I'd miss the actual, hold a book process but I don't! (Bit like the ownership of a CD case, soon passed when found iTunes!)

The process is easy, adjustable and convenient - I'm very pleased so far!

I'd looked into a Kindle prior to the iPad and don't know if I've got the best of both worlds, but it's pretty close if not!

Yeah, I'd prefer an iPad but the price is too much for my little ticker to cope with at the moment.

I've made my mind up and I'm ordering my Kindle (wi-fi only) and a case from the US store and then selling all my paper/hardback professional publications on EBay and buying them again for Kindle (one's that have Kindle editions).

I'll also be able to use my new book purchases as deductibles at tax-time so very happy.

It will be awesome finally being able to take all of my books with me, wherever I am and over time I will save on books when compared to the exhorbotant cost in Australia (i.e. 'C++ Gotchas' $175 AUD from Borders Online and from Amazon.com it's $30 US - no brainer really).

I've owned a number but I generally eat mine so I'm not sure 'own' is the right word . . . and I'd never be able to fit a book in it but it does have a little plastic toy in the middle . . . in fact I don't know what you're talking about . . .

I have the Kobo - the one promoted by Borders. It's okay and only cost $199 - although I believe it's now cheaper. I have discovered some that books that Amazon sell for the Kindle are not available for Kobo - and vice versa. They can be converted to work but it's a hassle.

I think Kindle is the way to go for reading novels and an ipad or other slate-type computer for reading magazines and books with lots of graphics/pictures.

Theres a new 7 inch ipad coming out soon which should address the weight issue that the current iPad has. Plus, if iPad 2 has the retina display which the iPhone 4 has, then a 7 inch iPad 2 will be the ultimate device. Kindle might be easier to read in sunlight than the ipad but that would also be addressed by the retina display.

Yeah but the issue also boils down to $139 USD vs $1,000 AUD?

A base model 16gig ipad costs $629. Buy it in the US right now and it will be even cheaper. A 7 inch version will be cheaper again. Plus, its not just a reader.

True, but all I want is somewhere compact and bijoux to store a multitude of ebooks, which I like to have to hand when I am at work (not feasible with my current collection)...

I ordered mine Fri and it arrived Wed and that was after a delay as it was sent to the wrong carrier.............it is fab, I love it!

It is simplicity itself to use - I have the wi-fi only version too, typed in the wep and it was good to go. I only turn on wi-fi to download and then I switch it off to save battery life, if you are using it merely as a reading tool there is no reason to keep wi-fi on anyway? All the books I've downloaded have taken 30 odd seconds from ordering via one-click to downoad, impressive. I'm currently sampling a few books which is another great feature, sort of like standing in Smiths at lunchtime and reading the 1st chapter of a book but without the guilt! Reading in bright sunshine is a pleasure, I found the brightest sunniest part of the garden to read it in, held it at various angles and it passed with flying colurs.Text to speech is a bit crummy, it's like having Stephen Hawking read to you but then I was never a fan of speaking books so not a big deal.

You will love

I just stick to the iPhone and multi choice book readers plus all the other whistles and bells. I'd rather have multi use than just one thing.

Re: Kindle

In our household we have ipod touches, iphones, ipad, and a kindle.

The Kindle for reading wins hands down.
- battery life means it is always available
- browsing wireless amazon (ive got 3g) means you can see a book in a airport bookstore and buy it on kindle for <50% in 30seconds and be reading it within a minute.
- it is small but sturdy and in the leather case i dont mind chucking it around hte car, briefcases, etc ,
- it looks like a slim filofax when yo walk around with it so taking it to a doctors appointment or somewhere you are going to be waiting and want to read is no problem.
- the screen quality is *unbelievable*
- compared to other e-readers I looked at the kindle is much better form factor, has a better screen, is faster to do page turns (you dont notice it - but on other devices you certainly do)
- I subscribe to newspapers whichi because of 3g are on the device when i wake up in morning

Ipad - is brilliant for reading high glossy full scan images of magazines/newspapers, and of course books but... Its 3x the price, has 10hrs instead of 30days battery life, is heavier, fragile, and expensive - lose an ipad at the coffee shop and cry eyes out for long time lose kindle - just cry a bit. Screen is rubbish in sunlight , the device is large and heavy and fairly 'indiscrete' if sat in a coffee shop or a drs surgery etc and you cant hold it in one hand.

Ipod- is good for reading a tiny bit, the screen is so small , the kindle app syncs the current page you are on in each device so you rae always at the right page.

Get a kindle you really wont regret it they are fabulous book devices.

the only thing you lose is the snob factor of having a decent book cover on your coffee table :-)

I would normally agree with this and it was the reason I delayed buying a Kindle.

However if you are a serious reader it stands heads and shoulders above anything that can multi task.

I am a serious reader but have found reading off the iPhone quite easy and cost effective as well as it being a lot easier to carry 5" x 3" x 1/2" in your pocket.

I'm a bit confused (no change there, then...). I am thinking of getting the DX - I think it's called - which has a bigger screen that I can actually see. The Amazon site says I have to get it from a "different" part of the site since I am in Australia, but reading some of the above I get the impression that you can just order one from the US and get it sent.

What are the differences between the US and "Australian" orders? Is the connectivity different? Or the ability to download certain books?

Have a read of the trhead I linked to in my post above, post #5 Loads of info in that thread about the Us/Aus/UK thing, helped me make sense of it, though i will be interested to see how mine reacts when I get it to Aus. Downloads and connects fine in England though, which is a good start!

It is ordered from Amazon US but they have two 'shops' for it - the US shop and the "International" shop - You need the international shop which lets you enter Australia as your country of origin.

Thats the page either that or it'll snaffle your credit card details to my czhec hacker friends...

Yes, I've kept up with that - and this - thread which is probably why I'm confused!

There do seem to be many differing ideas as to how you can access US books depending on where you get the thing.

And the $2 charge for downloading outside the US - how do they charge that? I don't fancy putting credit card details in every time I buy.

The other thing of course will be battery life, and no-one yet knows how that will pan out. If you have to return it to the country where it was bought it wouldn't be all that friendly!

I will look forward to hearing how yours works out when you return. Incidentally, where did you buy it?

spalen Oct 25th 2010 10:53 am

Re: Kindle

Where you buy the device is irrelevant - its where your Amazon.COM account is registered (or rather - where your registered Address says you live in your amazon.com account) to access US Store you change your address in your amazon account to a US one, and thats it. Swap it back after buying.

The 2$ Fee is included in the price of books in Australia if you are registered as an australian user (see above) or if you use US store to download via 3g in roaming around the world the book will be X$ + 2$ - It is all charged to your amazon account ( You enter your payment details once in your amazon account)

Battery life - yes its not replaceable but they reckon 3-5 years depending on how you use it before its holding 30-50% of its charge ( that is still 9 days -> 15 days of life !). This is not one of those batteries that you have to let fully drain and fully charge - you can top it up whenever you are able to.

In 3 years someone will have invented an e-reader that implants behind your eyeball and makes you think you are drinking a latte whilst reading so you wont worry about your kindle, your grandkids will be playing with it.
