Initial Accomodation Costs

First of all, sorry if this gives the impression of advertising in a thread which is against the rules - it is not intended to be. I trust the mods can use their descretion?
Its just doing some research on this for melbourne at the moment and its perhaps an issue for discussion, relevant for those in the UK.
When we arrived in 2006 with quite a healthy budget we stayed in a Quest short term apartment (2 bed) for $200+ per night. Now I am seeing caravan park type accomodation coming close to $150 per night
(this is based on including all the extras and + additional person etc).
Now being family orientated (ie with a 5 week premature baby recently arrived) I am concerned that people (familes) arriving and needing a place to stay for I guess up to 3 weeks while they look for longer term accomodation are getting an unfair deal.
I have a friend relocating here from south america (he has a career in which while is very self fulfilling it is by no means providing him financial security for his family) He had a budget for initial short term accomodation of $300 to $500 per week. When I said it will be closer to $700 to $1000 per week he laughed and said "oh well we will move into a caravan for a few weeks". He stopped laughing when i said that is for a caravan.
What were or are your expectations on various items:
Price
Facilities
Location
Your thoughts people? perhaps warnings or recommendations (without outright advertising). Any thoughts for short term accomodation between $300 and $500? (Family of 6, 2 adults, 4 kids).

Don't know about situation in Melbourne.
When we arrived in Adelaide we have been booked in short stay apartment, 2 bedrooms, bath, kithcen, furnished, all kitchen stuff etc.
Located in Norwood which is a nice area and very convenient. It was 85$ a day. Stayed there for 4 weeks and had no problems at all.

Examples of properties we deal with are $400 for a 1 bed unit to $2000 for a waterfront home (per week). People that are moving over need to realise that property owners will charge a premium for short term accommodation as they are not guaranteed the same income as they would be if the were renting properties on a 6/ 12 month lease.

When we arrived two years' ago, we paid $280 a week in Chelsea Gardens caravan park for a two bed, fully self-contained, cabin. The price was good as we were staying for over 4 weeks. However, I have noticed that they have now been taken over by Beston Parks (I think) and the price is way more.

We arrived 1yr ago and rented in Toongabbie (west of Sydney) - 2-bed, 2-bath, laundry-room-with-loo, large lounge, dining area, small yard, garage, for $275 pw. Were we just lucky?

We stayed here http://www.stayz.com.au/23866 for a month when we first arrived in August 2007. If memory serves me right, the price was even reduced a little as we booked a full month. The location wasn't perfect, but it was nice and clean and a great price.
Their current top price is $148 per night which is really good.

We are still in the UK and hope to arrive in August. I've been looking at accomodation costs and had already been warned that furnished accomodation would be costly.
After seeing people on here recommending a Caravan Park, we thought we would do that....but was very suprised at the costs!
After looking on Britvics, there is a recommendation on there for short term accomodation. If you stay between 3-4 weeks then they also collect you from the Airport (which I think is great after such a long flight), and you can also give them a shopping list beforehand which they get in for your arrival.
I think it's the little touches like this that will make a huge amount of difference.
