My mum phoned this morning to say they found a cancerous lump on her annual mammogram this week :( Shes having it removed on 2nd July - apparently its tiny and she will hopefully only need radio therapy afterwards - but its just that 'C' word isnt it. Life f***ing sucks sometimes. Its always hard when your family are sick and you are over the other side of the world and can't do anything. We all have, or no doubt will, experience that at some time or other so can empathise with you. Good luck to her! |
Re: I got the dreaded phone call
awww Rach (wanted to send you a hug emoticon but they didn't have one on here)
so (((((((((((big hug)))))))))) i shall send you a better one on MSN later! Shit news mate, but on the upside as everyone else has said , it sounds like mum's caught it early so thats real good My aunt/godmother had the same, oh gosh must be 16 years ago now, she's fighting fit and brilliant! Fingers crossed that she doesn't need radio, and just the removal will be good! thinking of you honey, nothing worse than feeling useless either |
Re: I got the dreaded phone call
Aww thanks so much guys. I've spoken to mum again today (it was such a quick call this morning that I really didnt get chance to take it all in - I almost felt angry when I was talking to her - horrible). I feel a bit better for having spoken to her. She has def decided to have the entire breast removed. The doc told her that the outcome would be the same as if she just had a lumpectomy........but if she had her breast removed then she wouldnt need radio - so actually the results arent the same are they???!!! No questions asked anyway - she decided before she left the room to get the entire thing off. She told him she'd cut it off herself right there and then if she had a knife and he told her not to do that as she may get an infection :D
Its so nice to hear other peoples positive stories. I've only had negative experiences of cancer before so I do struggle with the positive a bit - I'll get there though. I headed for my favourite form of therapy today - retail :) It worked for a while and then I started to flag - gonna start my next form of therapy soon........wine! :D Thanks ever so much for taking the time to reply everyone - it is very very much appreciated :) Rach xxxx |

Yeah my mum had the mastectomy too and is ok with it, she said she just wanted the cancer out and didnt want to risk it coming back. And thankfully she didnt need any other treatment, just tamoxifen tablets. I didn't want to tell you the details before cos I didn't want to worry you with too much information. The last thing you need when you or a family member are faced with the big C is hearing all the horrible details of what other people have been through treatment wise and then being told they've got it again!

I have told her to get both chopped off and get a free boob job out of it though - shes a bit saggy as it is so it wouldnt do her any harm! :) Thats what I would do if it was me! All joking aside though I do hope she gets both of em off just so she (and me) doesnt have to worry so much about it coming back. At the moment I'm considering whether or not to go back there to be with her for the op and to help her afterwards. She lives with her ex boyfriend (long story) who is going on holiday 2 days before her op so she wont have anyone at home with her. I'd also like to be with her through it anyway (for both of us). I keep reminding myself - shes lucky its been caught early, very early, very lucky :) Now I'm off out on the piss with the girls to take my mind off it :) Thanks again Rach xxxx |
Re: I got the dreaded phone call
Sorry to hear your bad news Rach.
Hope all goes well for your Mum. |
Re: I got the dreaded phone call
I think she will definitely need someone to look after her when she gets out of hospital, she wont be allowed to do very much for a while & will be in a lot of pain no doubt.
All the best to your mum ! Nicky :) |
Re: I got the dreaded phone call
It's a horrible disease but it has been caught early so i am sure everything will be ok. But even still the C word sucks :frown:
((((((( hugs )))))) ((hug )) and i little one for mum too :) |
Re: I got the dreaded phone call
Sorry to hear about your Mum, Rachel.
You said you only had negative experiences with the 'C' word, so here is another positive one: MIL had the same thing about 14 years ago. Had her boob chopped off. Didn't need radio or chemo, just Tamoxifen tablets for a few years and has had the all clear ever since. Gina |

Re: I got the dreaded phone call
sorry to hear about your mum, try to keep positive treatments are getting better all the time
but when its your mum its hard as mums are so precious  |
Re: I got the dreaded phone call
Sorry to hear your news, treatments have come a long way now and sounds like they have caught it early.
An ex colleagues daughter, who is just 20, has just found out that she has breast cancer. She went to the docs last August who said it was just a cyst. As it was still there last month she went for tests and found it was cancer. She had her boob off 2 weeks ago. Her consultant says he has never treated anyone so young before. But she is trying to get on with it as best she can its knocked the stuffing out of her mum though. I wish your mum all the best and hope she will be fighting fit soon. Hugs Joex |

I really dont know what to feel at the moment - a bit numb - just in shock I think. The docs make it sound so simple......we'll just remove the lump and then you 'may' need radiotherapy. Wish there were no emotions attached to the 'C' word :( Just take heart in the fact that it has been picked up with our wonderful modern technology, and will be treated promptly. And have faith in her doctors for being so vigilant. Breast cancer is so treatable nowadays and millions of women get through it. But I know how you feel and you must be so shocked. Look after yourself and easy though it is to say, trust her doctors. :) |
