how things are changing in the u.k..!!

i was reading in my local news paper last night how polish is now the second language in my home town.
my wife told me last week that they had started to put up street signs in polish ,i thought she was pulling my leg until i saw them for myself.

not that it bothers me in the slightest they are all hard working people and i'm off.

i dont think my partner would have the same opinion as me though ,hes just doubled his mortgage and the rug has been pulled from under us in the building trade..we have had to watch our wages halve in the last two years.this year is bordering on recession.bricklayers were earning £200 a day finishing at 3 and doing half a shift on a friday.not anymore there is talk now of £100 a shift..

i dont know if other parts of the country are the same?

I was told by my mother that Bradford was going to be re-named, due to the high occupancy of Muslims there. It is going to be the first city with a muslim name.

To your everyday Pole, £100 for a shift is a kings ransom. that's enough to pay for the rent, some food and beer and to send some back home. They also work very hard for their money, concientious and skilled too.

Market forces will dictate that employers will generally employ cheaper workers who do a better job...

I'm never quite sure what "multiculturism" means.

Does it just mean its literal sense - i.e. many cultures in one country?

Or is about integration?

GBP100 is roughly GBP25k or AUD62k per year. I think that is about the average salary in both Countries? Plenty of British and Australian people would be over the moon with GBP100 or AUD250 per day.
I like the Polish. They have more in common with the west that Muslim communities and they don't hate us.

well amazulu ,as said earlier, they are real grafters, they are very polite and trust worthy,i have had a couple on for me,i did not pay them cheap labour though i paid them the same as everyone else.they were better workers than my lads and never moaned.
i packed in taking on big jobs because i could not stand the moaning from my blokes, its not surprising why employers want to employ polish...

When I worked for the police, the essence of multiculturalism meant people of different cultural/religious/ethnic backgrounds living in any defined community, be it a street, district, suburb, town or city. It can pretty much be bent/twisted to incorporate any kind of situation where you have two or more different groups in close proximity

Your comments are echoed by employers in Perth.

Many unions here have bitten the hands that feed them and employers are starting to bring in foreign labour because they are, as you have said, real grafters and don't down tools at the slightest opportunity.

Yes - that definition sits most at ease with me.

that's a fair comment - I think the Poles do have more of a shared sense of culture than most if not all of the islamic peoples.

I've worked with Poles in the past, aand this is absolutely true. I work with one in my current company, and he really does do the work of two people. He's always on the go.

Also, I have taught polish kids in schools, and the same attitude is reflected there - work always up to date, homework always completed on time, books always kept neat and tidy, never late to lessons. It's just a shame that the lunatic English kids don't take a leaf from their book...

My paternal grandmother was a Pole. They're great people, for all the reasons listed so far - and more. I'd be happy to have more of them in Australia. :)

Both of the above.

Many cultures in one nation, integrated but not assimilated.

Just pointing out that there is another side to all this. It is not just migrant workers who like mobility of labour.....many employers also cash in on it.

there is quite a large community in Peterborough close to where I used to live before I moved to Perth. My Mum used to go there to get these lovely biscuits when I was a kid, they were soft and a bit spicy (as in cinnamon type spice) and covered in dark chocolate. They were yummy.

There is also a Polish community in Perth.

There are also several different ethnic communities

I sometimes wonder if people who start this sort of discussion really understand the multicultural makeup of Australia.

Yes Vash, and I am just one of those sons whose father still remains an active member of the Polish Community at Digbeth. Worth a visit as they make you feel welcome and their deli/shop stocks all those biscuits, breads and small goods.

Just watch the vwodkaaaaa

My father found it difficult to settle in the 40's and 50's but soon found work as a toolsetter at IMI Kynoch - Witton. He would be heartened by the posts.

this year is bordering on recession.bricklayers were earning £200 a day finishing at 3 and doing half a shift on a friday.not anymore there is talk now of £100 a shift..
I really dont mean to course offence with this post, but c'mon.........£200 a shift.........half days????????.......most or many professionals, certainly in the North would struggle to earn that kind of money, and as for factory/manual production workers, they are earning little over that a week without overtime.....BEFORE tax.

I can see how it would be awful once someone has become used to a certain income, and then see it half'd..........but I think bringing tradies and semi skilled/skilled labourer's wages into line with the average working Joe is a good thing, after all it is the average Joe that tends to employee the services of this section of the work force.....either directly or indirectly.

Just my thought's on what I read, having said all that, if there was to be a huge influx of migrant systems admin's into the Lancashire area, and my wages where half'd, I too would be complaining.

Ast, my friends in my hometown in the U.K (St.Helens) tell me the same thing  ...so I wonder if they will put signs up in the languages of other nationals? There are already many signs over there and by the time you manage to read them all (if you do) you have gone past your turn off ;) ...Bindi.

It's good in Perth. They don't even bother with signs - so you've no idea where you're going anyhow!

I know they are doing road works on the A49 on the Shropshire/Cheshire border area and have put up lots of diversion and road signs in Polish. Apparently tho, (so says the local council), this is for Polish lorry drivers (and not local Polish population) who don't understand the signs and keep getting into trouble.
