Better yet, pick up the phone and give them a call. Emails have a nasty habit of getting lost or not responded to.

Don't mind the whole agency or industry thing.
They're not too concerned about being on the books of others - they normally ask you if you've been sent for another job and it's up to you to know where you've been represented although there is scope for a little confusion. Keep a list. Agents have got me well paid jobs without much effort so I can't knock them. |

Hi Kayelem, I have read through the thread but can't seem to see what job in IT your husband does?
We're heading of to Perth in a couple of months and both my huband and I work in IT (different disaplines though). Possibly it was right place right time but I got offered a job with a visa on a reccie trip out recently, so saying I did put in a lot of effort to finding companies, not agencies to talk to. I've seen that people have mentioned Linkedin already but not suggested what I did and actually this was the way I came across my new employer. Once your husband is on Linkedin do a search for all the people in the area currently doing his job, look to see who they work for currently in that capacity and who they have previously worked too and then look up the company find the HR dept or head of IT and approach them will an email with a CV asking them to review it and if possible could he go in for a chat. As far as agencies are concerned I only visited a few in Perth, I was impressed by PeopleBank and Robert Walters (certainly worth calling - have got contact names if you want them just pm me) also may I suggest checking out WALGA (Western Australian Local Government Association) again I have a name etc. Hope that helps. :) |

Recruitment Agents are in the same league as Used Car Salesmen and Real Estate Agents in my book. They are OK for temping jobs, but I reckon half the full time jobs they advertise don’t even exist - they just want you on their books. They probably have monthly targets and get commission for each poor sucker they sign up onto their books. But I am very suspicious about them – just say I have dealt with them off and on for 15 years and after a while you notice a set pattern emerge. Being proactive and cold calling employers yourself often helps to secure a job. Otherwise temping is a good way to make contacts whilst earning money and looking for something more permanent |

one of the first questions they'll ask is "who've sent your CV to?" . . . and they don't mean companies but other agencies. If you've already distributed your CV to another agency, they'll generally want nothing to do with you.
When I was temping I signed up to about 10 different agencies but pretended to each one that I was only signed up to them. I am a very honest person and this seemed wildly dishonest to me in the beginning. But I learnt from bitter experience that most recruitment agents would sell their own grandmother if they thought they could earn commission on the transaction. They don't care about you or your needs - so you have to protect yourself. I have only ever met one nice honest recruitment agent – the rest have been about as deep as a toddlers paddling pool. Sydney recruitment agents seem particularly bad. One of the worst agencies is being run by an ex-pat pom no less. As you can tell – I have a few issues with this subject :D Cold calling or answering job ads in the newspaper placed by the employer, is less stressful and has yielded better results for me. Good luck. |

I know AIN may be a bit beneath you at this stage of your career but it will bring in money and you may make some excellent contacts. Plus there are lots of home care agencies needing staff. This is Sydney based, but there is bound to be something similar in your area: http://www.wesleymission.org.au/cent...Employment.asp OR http://www.kincare.com.au/ Good luck |

That is simply not true. There's no money to be made by simply having candidates on their books. Recruiters only get paid if they actually place someone.

All candidates should be treated as human and the good recruiters do do that.
The rest have been cold blooded slimy reptilians - think V! :D The one I am dealing with at the moment is a complete nut case. Constantly trying to manipulate me, lying to me and contradicting herself in the process. Advice to recruiters – if you are going to lie to the candidates, at least keep a note of what you said last time! I really want the job (if it actually exists) but I am not sure dealing with her is worth it. |

And most of them will ride roughshod over their candidates to make that money. Besides that, most of them don't have enough compassion or honestly to do any sort of social work  Now from your comments it looks like you are a recruiter - so sorry if my words have offended you in anyway, I am not attacking you personally. But after 15 years of dealing with recruiters and experiencing how they operate, I really can’t express any like or respect for them as a profession. Sorry, can't help how I feel. |
Re: How long before getting a job (IT)
I had a call the other day, which I missed and they left a message.
"Hi bcworld it's blah calling from Milestone search reagrding a reference". Strange I thought, no one had contacted me to let me know they were applying for anything but I am listed as a referee for a couple of people. Called back and told the switchboard person...said it was to do with a reference...she chuckled knowingly. I got put through to the guy who had called not 5 mins before...he was like, "reference....what reference? Oh yeah the reference....hold on while I find the details". Noise of shuffling of papers for a few seconds....."look, I can't find the details. So you're a SharePoint consultant right? We have an amazing opportunity (aren't they always!).......". Bye bye. |

Could just be an incompetent recruiter or could be doing 'off the record' reference checks which is illegal in Australia. |
