Re: How long before getting a job (IT)

Took me 3 months to get an IT position (and I was voluntarily out of work for 3 years before that in the UK) ... I recommend taking a short term contract just to get Aussie experience and contacts ... contracts are very routinely extended here in my experience.

IT Recruitment Agencies? Don't like 'em, in general ... failed estate agents ... building a network of contacts is going to work better here, IMO ...

Hi Guys,

Some really good advice here on this forum, didnt realise how difficult it is to get a job!!!!! My hubby and I came over on his visa, being told they were crying out for his skills, how more wrong were they????? My Hubby has been applying for job after job for 3weeks only now being told he needs to get his trade recognised again in WA before anyone will touch him....why does he have to do it all again?????Thankfully i do have a job as a neonatal nurse.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Leannelo

Almost all trades require licences and registration to work heree, and beware as most States have different rules. Proving you are qualified sufficiently to get a visa doesn't count once you actually get here,

That's not how recruiters operate. If a recruiter receives a CV that's placeable they will be on the phone straight away in order to get you off the market before any of their competitors and make a placement fee. Placement fees range anywhere from $5K+ but in IT would average around $12K with some of the more senior guys at around the $20K mark so there's a lot of incentive for them to call. If they don't call it means they don't think they can place you.

They've probably already got your bosses name on their database. Recruiters do check references you know and especially for contract roles.

I would never represent a contractor to my client that I have never used before without doing some due diligence. With permanent placements usually references after an offer.

And yes, a lot of those tricks mentioned do happen.

Aussie regulation for you.

Some of them are but good recruiters earn a hell of a lot more than estate agents.

Hi,When did you get to Perth, if you qualified Jan 2009 we are now in july 2010. that well over 12 months experience, why do you need to do care aid ??

I never went straight into work after qualifying I have 3 kids and needed to spend time with them after 3 years hard work training. I then went into a nursing home purely because the hours worked out better for me 8am -2pm part time meant I could get the kids from school whereas hospital hours ended at 3 - 4pm and beyond so just wasn't reliable enough. I worked May 09 until end Jan 2010 when I left to sort the house and everything out for emigrating. So I only ahve 8 months worked expereince in total now my kids are older I felt ready to get back into hospital over here but looks like a no go. If it means I can stay in the care sector the care aide is better than nothing. Must be a very rewarding job being a neonatal nurse.

Thankyou!!! I am a caring person. I love my residents back in the UK I know some nurses would never work in EMI but it is rewarding. Never mind its early days yet something might just come up. ;)

Great, I'm pleased the good ones exist and prosper ... I have yet to meet many though ... I think the word Shysters covers it for me.

Having said that my last contact was a top bloke, unfortunately he got sick of the business and moved into the Financial Sector.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it is easy to place people in such a specialist field but , my life, sometimes all you have to do is treat your potential income as human sometimes.

You are right. All candidates should be treated as human and the good recruiters do do that.

Have you tried applying for a graduate position?

Hi Kayelem, I have read through the thread but can't seem to see what job in IT your husband does?
We're heading of to Perth in a couple of months and both my huband and I work in IT (different disaplines though). Possibly it was right place right time but I got offered a job with a visa on a reccie trip out recently, so saying I did put in a lot of effort to finding companies, not agencies to talk to. I've seen that people have mentioned Linkedin already but not suggested what I did and actually this was the way I came across my new employer. Once your husband is on Linkedin do a search for all the people in the area currently doing his job, look to see who they work for currently in that capacity and who they have previously worked too and then look up the company find the HR dept or head of IT and approach them will an email with a CV asking them to review it and if possible could he go in for a chat.
As far as agencies are concerned I only visited a few in Perth, I was impressed by PeopleBank and Robert Walters (certainly worth calling - have got contact names if you want them just pm me) also may I suggest checking out WALGA (Western Australian Local Government Association) again I have a name etc.

Hope that helps. :)

I won't bore you with my job situation I put it on the nursing forum but we cam on my OH occupation. He it in IT with years and yaers experience. He has applied for loads of jobs at least 4 a day but despite having to go in to see the agents in the city he gets no further except he has got past the agent and secured and interveiw on Monday. Just wondering if this is normal? He's applying for less experience roles now as well just to try and get something. I would ahve put this on the IT forum but barely anyone visits it compared tot he barbie.

Better yet, pick up the phone and give them a call. Emails have a nasty habit of getting lost or not responded to.
