Have to agree with Gina here. Accountants ARE in demand IN PERTH (I've had employers contact me rather than the other way around). Why should they employ a specialised UK Inland Revenue a/c when the tax system is fundamentally different out here? And before you say it isn't, I'm taking the Oz tax exams and IT IS.

Attitude has a lot to do with success.

(No, sadly, I don't think it's a troll)

I don't remember getting an engraved invitation from the Australian immigration department, and as far as I'm aware they don't send them out to anyone else either. It was our choice to come here same as all the other immigrants on this site. Nobody is forcing anyone to move to Australia and nobody is forcing anyone to stay. If it's so awful for you and yours, then the best thing would be to bugger off back where you came from.
Precisely.

All those things you say have happened to you here, can and do happen all the time in the UK (except the ownership of a crappy Holden of course) you just were not aware of it because you were in your home country and knew stuff you don't know here regarding work. Depending on where you lived, your daughter may or not have come up against nasty comments - most teenage girls are more than capable of making bitchy comments to each other regardless of what country they live in.

Your son would not have been "accused" of being posh where you were in the UK because presumably all his friends sounded the same as him. Had you moved to a totally different area of the UK he would have likely have had the same comment.

I can only suggest you all sit down as a family and decide where you want to be and if it turns out to be the UK then you try and set things in motion to get back.

I'm not sure insulting people you know nothing about is the right way to go to make friends and influence people but whatever rocks your boat.
Can you read my mind? ...couldn't have said it better myself.

Agree too, Brisbane was our first choice but a quick search made us realise that all the accountancy job where in the other major cities, so Perth it was. Hubby got is job with in 5 days of looking

The housing market in OZ is already overpriced and overheated causing inflation, the last thing the OZ government would want in thousands of poms with wads of causing rising the housing prices.

BTW I do not appreciate the names of my children being made fun of. They were both named after their grandparents. My father's father (Morgan) received a medal in the Great War, perhaps you find that a laughing matter, I however, do not.

Vash, of course we reseached things before we came here, and yes, sorry to dissapoint you but accountants are one of the professions being touted as 'in short supply' not only by the agencies but some of the programs and certainly the emigration fairs. We knew money would be tight, but quite frankly most of the Australian real estate sites simply post lies about house prices on their websites.

I think those that extol the virtues ofAustralia in the UK should add a little reality to their pitch, especially about the horrendous expense, low wages and lack of culture.
There are some people who really, really should go back to the UK, leave the colonies, and then always take thier holdays on the Norfolk Broads. You are one of them. You'll be happy I'm sure.

Lies in real estate prices ??? Maybe instead of blaming an entire nation you should really take a cold look closer to home...

But then, what would I know being an uneducated, uncultured lazy hooligan who accepts second best.

But I'll tell you what, if half your attitude in your posts comes across in an interview, I wouldnt employ you either!

Oz is not for everyone - good luck with whatever you choose to do.

Good post though.
I must be lazy because I rejoice in the fact I don't work long hours. Bring it on.

I have to say I'm disappointed by the response to this thread. In the months that I've become addicted to this site, I've thought the vast majority of posts fair and most of the people nice and welcoming. And I don't think that the response to this poor chap's post is proportionate to the comments that he's made.

Isn't it bad enough to find that you've moved half way across the world to somewhere that hasn't lived up to your expectations (whether those expectations were reasonable is a different issue) without having a load of people mouthing off at you for daring to voice your opinions?

One specific point - accountancy is a broad church and encompasses many specialisms. I should imagine that a small minority of Australian accountants have any need to know about taxation (I certainly didn't when I worked in Sydney). Equally the UK Inland Revenue employ various types of accountants, not necessarily tax specialists. Whilst I would think that having the Revenue on your CV would probably count against you because many employers would not bother to find out what your skills were, no-one can conclude from the information we have that the OP does not have sufficient experience or knowledge to be a good Aussie employee without undertaking further study.

It's not looking good for me is it? I'm an accountant and from Tunbridge Wells. Just as well I'm not heading for Brisbane...

And to the OP - you might want to look in the Moving Back to the UK forum if you are seeking like minds.
