Default Household bills down under

Hey all

Just wondering for you guys in Aus are your household bills cheaper in Aus than they were in the UK or Ireland??

I know things are going crazy around the world at the moment with the price of oil. But here in Ireland any company that seeks a increase is getting it.

Electricity gone up 17.5% with a further increase due in the near future and gas going up 40%. Now having got a two month bill for 600 euro last winter nearly brought on a cardiac. The thoughts of that with another 40% on top. You may just **** me in the hole now my ticker or wallet will not take that

Thinking of buying a big dog to chase the postman away

Any way just thought i would ask

Thanks Paddy

Not for long. Once Australia's carbon scheme kicks off then expect all prices to rocket.

Agree with all of that.

Pay here in dollars what I used to pay in pounds.

Council tax + water rates = 1500 pounds; Rates (includes water charges) = $1300

Same for insurance (car and home), electric, gas (bottled).

Petrol's gone up heaps since we got here, I'd say 45-50 cents a litre, about 40%, in just over a year. Around the $1.55 a litre mark.

Public transport is cheap enough, $33 for a weeks travel on the bus, which is about the most you can pay (all zones).

Electricity about $300 per quarter
Gas - use gas bottles
Rates (inc. water) - $2,000 per year
Private health - about $2,000 per year
Foxtel (cable TV) and Broadband (internet) - about $150 per month
Home phone line - about $50 per month
Mobiles - you can get away with $50 per month per mobile if you don't use it huge amounts or for business
Food shopping for two adults/two kids - about $250-300 per week
Car registration - think this is about $500 per year from memory
House and contents insurance about $90 per month
Car insurance - about $800 per year.
Schools books, uniforms and "voluntary" contributions - about $600-$1000 per year for two kids, junior school. School trips extra.
Tank full of petrol, about $80.
Don't forget to factor out of pocket medical and dental expenses into the equation also (Aus equiv of NHS only covers a percentage).

Hope that helps

Rates are more like $2500 per year.
Electricity $300 in winter per quarter closer to $600 in summer
Gas $600 in winter per quarter $300 in summer
Water $200 per quarter
Car insurance $900 pa (turbo)
Car rego $300 pa
Car green slip (third party insurance) $300 pa
House insurance $600 pa
Every trip to the doctor costs $52 of which medicare refunds $25or $30.
Prescription medicine $31 for stuff on the PBS more if it is not on the PBS
Dental appointment (for a 6 monthly check clean and polish) $200 per visit

IMO most everyday cost of living stuff is about the same as UK
Petrol is a bit cheaper $1.70 per litre

Average house in Canberra $480k (not flash just normal) Sydney + Perth more expensive, Adelaide, Brisbane +Melbourne a little cheaper

Mortgage rate 9.5% for a regular borrower (ie good credit rating)

Does that help?

Here is a rough breakdown of our bills both UK and Australia - monthly:

Electric $35 (at the most) in the UK we paid £80

Gas $10 in the UK we paid £20 a month

Water rates are included in rent in the UK we paid £25 a month

C/Tax none in the UK I think it was £120 a month

Health Insurance is $199 for top level cover for both of us, in the UK we had extras cover - basic and it was £80 a month.

Phone/Internet is $37, in the UK it was £40 a month

Travel works out at $30 - weekly, my travel card in the UK was £47 - weekly

We have no car, don't fancy Foxtel and obviously no TV license.

That's it I think.

Apart from our rent, everything is cheaper - for us anyway but Im sure if we had kids that would change.

We have wood burner for heating, washing machine and electic oven but just can't understand why cost is so high.....

Swings and roundabouts.
