And what could be the practical ramifications of confirming the existence of Higgs bosons?

Would they not be better spending their time producing frictionless bearings or infinite polution free energy? How about engineering foods that are immune form disease and bad weather?

All that money for what? A 'particle' no ne can see or prove one way or another. What a waste.

"How the universe works" isn't big enough for you. The basic rules of how everything operates - could mean anything (particularly how you could manipulate mass).

And exactly where do you think the understanding would come from for such areas of engineering (superconductivity and zero point energy)? Its exactly this type of area that makes the impossible (the bits you mentioned) possible.

Doesn't work that way - you don't go in with a wish list and then discover the means. You go in to discover how it works, then understand the consequences.

Err, they just proved it. So much the other direction from waste its not funny. Frankly I'd suggest there is more value in this than an Olympic Games (you could get 3 LHCs for one London 2012).

That would make talking about Quantum Mechanics kind of difficult - since lots of it is German; on account of most of the creators being krauts. Eigan this, Eigan that....

Well done Garry. Keep supporting the science over wastes of time like the 100 metres. I'm finding the entire discover really quite fascinating, and the ramifications are huge. Finding the Higgs means that steps to find clean, boundless energy are a little bit further on.

I dare say people were saying the same thing about scientists trying to crack the atom - what possible use can that have? Well now we now know it was an incredibly important discovery that has shaped the world we live in today...
