Antonyms are something you should learn for yourself:

I agree.

Antonyms are words that mean the opposite of a word. Some words have more than one antonym.

Cold = hot, warm ect

hard = soft

No, I wouldn't!

One of the arguments (and perhaps the *only* valid argument) for the use of computers in schools is that you learn to search out facts for yourself and - more importantly - make your own judgement on whether they *are* actually factual.

You mean leaving aside the fact that computers are a part of every facet of life and will probably play a role in your worklife, no matter what job you end up doing - and that not learning to use them in the 21st century is akin to not learning to read? Always cracks me up, when you see these old people on telly saying they never learned to use a computer, like it's a badge of honour.

I reckon even we oldies can learn to point and click, cut and paste etc in a few minutes <g>.

However, if you are talking "learn computers" - DOS, Windoze, Linux, OS10, C++ etc etc then that is a subject on its own and in that case I wouldn't disagree (much).

So Wol, are you saying its OK for my son to get asked questions as part of his homework on a subject he's never been taught?

I find it strange, but hey thats just me.

I know what you mean, but also, if you rely on computers, your kids will miss the basics, such as spelling (use a spell checker), mathematics (use a spreadsheet), research using books (use google) etc etc, and so be so reliant on computers as to be absolutely useless without one.

I think its important to learn the basics, like linguistics, arithmetic, spelling so you can actually write a letter or do some sums without having to turn on a computer.

So until my kids have mastered the basics, no they aint getting near a computer.

In the very least if it hasn't been taught then your son should have been instructed on HOW to find out the answers for himself. For example, the kids should be taught how to do some basic research first before giving them a topic to learn.

In this case it 'seems' as though your son has got neither the instruction on the topic or instruction on how to find the answer for himself.

That's just you <g>.

Assuming he's been taught, or has otherwise picked up, the meaning of "opposite", I would have thought that searching out the antonym of given words *is* OK. Isn't that what education's all about?

Referring him to {http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonym} for example is more likely to be of help in the long run than merely giving him the answers, which is what he requested.

But that's just me....

Sometimes BE is so pendantic btw!

NB to Jazzy's son: if you want ANYTHING answered in a simplistic straightforward manner then I suggest doing smoke signals to the next village or wishing on a star or indeed absolutely anything rather than post on here, as we lot love to have a banter and dissect every issue to its little bones!
