Oz is a lot more strict than in the UK and that's just what I've read on here. So much the better.

The only thing you will find in Oz, is lack of on site supervision .
Its ridiculous, you can walk on any site, with a hammer in one hand, and a screwdriver in the other, and not be asked a question.

Re: health and safety on constuction sites
Totally disagree.
OH has witnessed some Eastern Europeans who walk onto site saying they know the job but they know jack.
Some watch other tradies and then copy what they do.
This is all without qualifications etc. I.e. picking up a screwdriver etc and saying they know what they're doing. The CSCS cards were brought in to end this but as far as I can see it has not.
Also the H&S assessment that tradies are supposed to carry out is "simplified" for people outside of the UK.
Definitely not knocking tradies from outside the UK. Some are coming to the UK to make an honest living. However some are not.

Re: health and safety on constuction sites
On nearly all Uk sites, there is one or more of the following nearly full time:
Clerk of Works
Supervisor
Foreman
Site agent
Site Manager
Not in Oz

Timber has experience in both countries, remember, and no disrespect to those of you not here yet, but its one of those areas where first hand experience beats anything you read.

Re: health and safety on constuction sites
I agree those are working on UK sites. There is also supposed to be a site induction for every worker when they first enter the site. This is supposed to be a H&S induction, it is also where you show your CSCS card and they take a copy for office purposes. Unforunately it doesn't happen, or if it does not very often.

Re: health and safety on constuction sites
I think you'll find, as with many things in AUs, the red tape is horrendously complex, and the licensing is horrendously complex, but the actual story of what goes on after that is rather different.......

I am merely pointing out the failures in the UK system and that it's not very safe at all to work on UK sites.

The following link might help:
http://www.ascc.gov.au/
The whole H&S framework in Aus is based on the UK system (Robens - if you are a H&S proff) and is risk assessment / management based. The legislation varies slightly through each state with NSW / Vic setting the precedent that other states follow.
If you have a specific question or concern pm me and I will try and help.
There is a requirement for construction induction which is more comprehensive than the UK CSCS.... e.g. In NSW it is the 'Green Card' which if you are working in the Construction Industry you might have heard of as it is recognised in all the states and seems to be the most common. The following is the link for the National Code of Practice for Construction Inductions:
http://www.ascc.gov.au/ascc/aboutus/...uctionwork.htm
As you probably gathered I work in H&S - construction based and am a National H&S Manager covering all States.
