Re: Greatest Guitarists?
Some time ago I was given the 100 greatest guitar solos Cd set. I stuck it on the shelf & forgot about it as I had loads of music on the P.C i-pod etc.
I've just loaded it onto my phone to play at work as our new work radio has a docking gizmo.
Played most of it today & it had me thinking what a pile of crap to quite a few of the tracks. There's some classic tunes for sure, Clapton, Queen, Pink Floyd, Led Zep, Frank Zappa, Carlos Santana all produced amazing guitar solos.
Funnily enough Jimmy Hendricks had me cringing & reaching for the FF button. I've never really been a fan but most of his tracks sound like someone struggling to tune a guitar & play a few scales [?] Is he a case of the Emperors new clothes? The sound is awful & he seems to shout tunelessly into the mike. Not in my top 100.
A few surprises were Brian Setzer from the Stray Cats & Ted Nugent.
Who would make your top 5 strummers?

Good question. I never really rated Hendrix either - There were a handful of anthemic tracks, but there was also a lot of dirge and nonsense that just sounded the same.
I would probably say (and in no particular order):
Jo Satriani
Steve Vai
Chris DeGarmo
Adrian Smith
Eddie Van Halen
And a special mention for Lita Ford.

Love Jeff Beck
Off to see the Tijuana Cartel in Broome tonight (hard life) and they play fantastic flamenco guitar - or they did last time.

Re: Greatest Guitarists?
What metrics are people using? I know only a geek of epic proportion would construct a list of criteria to judge by, but what do people mean by a Greatest Guitarists? Do you judge it on the sound and how you respond to it, or on more technical matters?
I think Lou Reed is an underrated guitarist, and I have no idea how to answer my own question, other than gut instinct.
Oh and in answer to the Bill Bailey-Edge point:

Re: Greatest Guitarists?
This is a question that has no right or wrong, but my list looks like this:
Metal- Randy Rhoads
Noodling- Mike Kineally, closely followed by Steve Vai
Fusion- Alan Holdsworth
Tapping- EVH
Speed- Paul Gilbert, closely followed Malmsteen
Jazz- tie between Tal Farlow and John Scofield
BeBop- Emmylou Harris
Funk- Nile Rodgers
Composition and arranging- Steve Stevens
Blues- Hendrix or SRV
Soul- George Benson
Prog rock- Robert Fripp and David Gilmour
Grunge -Mike McReady
Industrial- Adam Jones
My all time favourite is Randy Rhoads, very closely followed by Johnny Greenwood.
I'll be getting into playing again seriously as it looks like I will need an ADR (disc replacement) in my spine, so running is definitely out so I'll just be cycling (eventually) and will have lots more time on my hands. Better break out the Cakewalk and Native Instrument programs again

Re: Greatest Guitarists?
this is where I get controversial. As much as I really like Floyd and their sound, Gillmore is technically nothing special. He is quite similar to the Edge in many ways, in that he is so reliant on effects. He is a much better guitarist than the Edge, but they both rely too much on effects than they do on technique to get their results. Also, Gillmore doesn't play the same effing guitar line in every song like The Edge. I am though, a big fan of Gillmore's contributions within Floyd, I just think his contributions are much more than not being a great guitarist.
Clapton, in my opinion should just stick to playing accoustic, I find him boring and predictable on electric. Says it all when Jack Bruce wrote Sunshine of Your Love with Hendrix in his mind to play the signature guitar line and not Clapton.
Slash, I think is overrated, however I don't think he is bad. Too predictable with his triplets playing.

Re: Greatest Guitarists?
Bonamassa is a modern day Hendrix..experimenting with techniques and sounds.
Steve Morse has done wonders for Purple.
Stevie Ray Vaughn was a genius....nuff said.
Gilmour for his feel....amazing.
Gary Moore...Outstanding and vastly underated.
Brian Stezer is the king of his genre...
I could go on and on and on and on...........

As Newly weds Deb & I used to go to a lot of Rock n Roll weekenders. I've seen some amazing Rockabilly guitarists over the years just young lads that loved the scene loved the music & could really play. I love the sound of a 50's Gretsch guitar so I guess it could just be that you do pick guitarists from the bands you like.
Played the rest of the CD today while the painter was on-site. His logic was that I don't like Hendrix because I don't play guitar. According to him if I did I would appreciate the complexity & innovativeness of the man.

I'm not a huge Slash fan, I can take or leave him. To me, when I hear anyone playing that genre, all I can hear is king of the double stop, Randy Rhoads

Re: Greatest Guitarists?
Setzer in the Stray Cats was my teen idol, well one of them the other being P. Paul Fenech.

Re: Greatest Guitarists?
If we're praising guitarists, I'll give a plug to a couple of Aussies...
Tommy Emmanuel plays a very mean Classical Gas.... (and others)
... and I like Ian Moss who is as cool as you can be when you're hot.

Re: Greatest Guitarists?
Again, no right or wrong but for me the best Aussie guitarist is Frank Gambale.
