Goths - what's it all about?

Dear oh dear I seem to be getting to old to appreciate the creativity of youth

I am sure they are making a statement about their individuality, and how they feel treated by the world!

Didn't we all do it to some extent at that age - maybe not with a dog lead tho!!

Probably end up being solicitors or something!

I reckon everyone goes through some kind of phase between 12 and 20 when they wear stuff to look cool and have ridiculous haircuts...I know I did, I cringe thinking about it !

But with the goths, it seems to be more of a lifestyle choice? Many of them just carry on with the black pvc and black dyed hair, and never seem to reach a point where they wake up and think "hmmm...I feel a bit silly wearing this.."

I don't know any goths. One of my mates loves his heavy metal, and he has the classic long hair and black t-shirts. But I'm afraid that's as far as I have penetrated into this mysterious world.

A good 10-15 years ago it used to be a 'i'm an individual and i'm not affraid of breaking the boundaries' look but today teenagers are mad for it (not to the extreme of the man and dog above, but make up, and small accessories).

They think they're trying to be individual but there are too many of them!
Claires accessesories (for gods sake!!) sell loads of gothy stuff!
The likes of Green Day, Avril Lavigne have set the gothy look off as a fashion!

Bless the kids who get wrapped up in it they think they look individual but it's not that way today!!

Its too late for you mate. I've only seen them once, I think I'm ok? the goth within me might be lying dormant.

I'll fess up. I used to be into the Goth thing. But back in the day it was a developing music genre and inspired a certain dress type which was more sophisticated than metal.

Its interesting to note that this subculture has outgrown many others and been around for so long. In my experience its always tended to attract a educated crowd.

As to the dog lead thing thats just stupid and frankly a tad more S&M than being into goth music and dressing like a vampire. Personally, I dont think it harms anyone so who cares.

yep, I reckon it will still be going strong when we're all old and wrinkly.

I never did anything like that as a kid.

But these days I would give it a go Just need to find the right woman to play the gimp or dominatrix (depending on my mood).
