Grew up with them. Parents bred and sold them as a sideline. Miss really fresh free range eggs - they make awesome cakes

Re: Gardening - Aussie style!
Well two of the toxic hens have been won over and are now openly socialising with the nice darkies who still crowd around me for protective custody whenever I step into the chicken run. 7 eggs laid today (4 smallish ones and 3 large). ...One old hen is not laying.
Meanwhile in the garden, the watermelon and rockmellon seedlings are coming up, potatoes and onions are showing through nicely, tomatoes will soon be ready to plant out and the chilli plant seeds have begun to germinate as are the strawberry seeds on the window sill . Hopefully some plums and apricots will survive the parrots. No sign of any carrots and gemsquash yet

It's the first time in many years that we've had a good sized garden to grow these kinds of things and we've just signed up another year's lease for our rental so can plan for the next 12 months. No problem with the chickens - they're confined to their run.

Take the axe in every now and again and show them you're not scared

It's not the chooks he will have to worry about, it's the billion and one pests that will eat the bloody lot before he gets a look in.

Hmmm maybe I should have put the tomatoes in the greenhouse and left the chickens to roam the garden

Our garden is almost nasturtium free waiting for the patch at the back to be seeded and the patch under the pergola to be cleared ready for veggies and possibly some chooks
Been investigating the defunct irrigation system at the front and I am hoping we can salvage it by attaching it to the front tap

liquidambers!! but a couple look like they might be squash or pumpkins.
Something has eaten my climbing beans (rabbits and/or snails) so I've had to plant more. The english spinach is being harvested almost daily now, the lettuce is ready to pick, so must sow some more. The rabbits ate the parsely, so I've netted that too, but they left the sage alone. Peppers are doing quite well as far as growth, but no flowers yet. Chard and chillies are just sprouting, and the spring onions are now 6" high, so I've just sown more to get a succession. Snails/birds got my tomatoes, so I'm on the second lot, which I've just potted on and netted. My garden is full of wire cages and net, and still the vermin eat the stuff, or the brush turkeys scratch out my seedlings.

On that topic I miss this Brisbane zoo we used to go to as kids. The dads used to drive the family car in with the lions. Keep the windows up kids. Maybe you could start up a new one ?
