The flag does not need to change when Australia becomes a republic. The flag is heavily symbolic of Australian identity and a change is both unnecessary and dangerous. And change will be pushed for by the same kind of idiots that have just spent the last 10 years destroying Britain.

I don't believe the flag is related to the republican issue; we could become a republic and keep the current flag. However, I do believe it should be changed.

If you look at my signature, you'll see my preference for a new Australian flag.

It's exactly the same as the old one, with the Union flag removed and one star coloured gold.

How does that make it "like something from a kinder art lesson"?

Any change to the Flag needs a referendum.

Australia belongs to all Australians, not to one group.

And incidentally, the Torres Strait Islanders are another indigenous group who aren't Aboriginal and have another flag of their own.

I'm an Australian, and I love the current flag.

My problem is that WHEN we become a republic I don't think it's right to have a Union Jack in it.

But goodness, the alternatives presented in 'hypothetical' new flag polls over the years have been shocking.

If changing the flag means we end up with something that's orange and black and has a kangaroo hopping across it....then I'm all for keeping the Union Jack.

(Though, if we did get something orange and black with a kangaroo, New Zealand would have a considerably harder time copying it this time around.)
