The Flag
If Australia becomes a Republic, do you think they should change the flag, and if so, do you think they should get rid of the Union Jack?

I don't think they should get rid of the English flag. It's still part of history. Even United states, retained the red white and blue in some form. |

I do think that all countries should be republics and direct democracies, where possible. I don't see the point of a mascot queen, nor do I see the point of monarchy in today's age. You either have power or you don't. If you don't, what's the point of your existence? Mascot?

I reckon they should keep the flag as it is. It's a damn cool flag! And like you say, it's part of modern Australia's history. By the way... the Union Jack is the British flag, not English! The Scotts and Welsh get a bit upset when people make that mistake! |

Fair points, though I don't agree about the monarch bit where the UK is concerned. The Queen and royal family are part of British identity, and part of British history, and I don't see the benefit in getting rid of them.

As for getting rid of the union jack in the Australian flag, if Australia becomes a republic then a new identity will be called for and I am sure that the union jack part of the Australian flag will disappear. Australia is really only a very young country (in the modern sense) and does not have much tradition so a change to a republic wont be that hard to sell to our multicultural society once QEII is no longer the monach Barney |

I knew that. I know that the flag of England is St. George's Cross. Unfortunately for the Scots and the Welsh and the Northern Irish, I and a few others who make this mistake think of England when they think of Britain.
And it really gets my goat!!!:curse: I hear it so often here that I accidently said something the other day about stuff I received from England!! |
Re: The Flag
some years ago there was a big change the flag thing and submissions for new flags were called for and designs shown in the media etc.......they could revisit those designs if they decide to change the flag in the future.....Think it was back in Paul Keating's era if I remember rightly.
