As you previously said, both are great Cities and threads like these are just pointless. We looked at moving to Sydney 3 years ago with my wife's job, but it just didn't suit us as well as Melbourne. It's strokes for folks.

Well, no matter what the views of anyone else, we're looking forward to our first trip to Melbourne, next weekend for Himself's 40th.
We were living in Qld when it was mine, so we went to Sydney for the weekend, 12 months later Himself ended up working in Sydney CBD.. so I hope its not indicating that a move to Victoria will then be on the cards, because I'm never ever ever EVER moving again.

From: Hill overlooking the SE Melbourne suburbs

Obviously each to their own but I think that the Golden Mile walk is a great intro to Melbourne. You can start at the immigration museum (on Flinders) where it's worth picking up the booklet for $8-9. The first couple of buildings are a little so-so but it's worth sticking with it. It is also more than a mile long.
I just rate it for living there(!)

The greenery in Melbourne is one of the major draw cards. Maybe not so much the western suburbs, but the city and eastern suburbs are fantastic for this. There is a great mix of exotic and native vegetation very close to the city.
Some one mentioned Paris and put up some photos. Although I've never been to Paris, from what I have seen of it in photos it is a stunning city. Melbourne is much closer to your Paris type cities than Sydney is. It is wonderful to have so much secluded natural environment so close to a city. Central Sydney just doesn't really have that same feeling. The suburban areas do but not the inner city areas. Melbourne has that wonderful sophistication whereas Sydney has the glitz.

There's no way Melbourne is greener than Sydney. Id say any comparable type of suburb in Sydney is greener. 1200mm of rain a year tends to do that for you though.

Other suggestions for Dreamy.
Although I'm not an avid sports fan I enjoyed the MCG tour. The Olympics museum is there as well but I've not been in there.
I liked the Rialto observation deck. I know Melly is not as pretty as Sydney but at least you do get a 360 degree view. (I was disappointed with the Sydney observation tower as you don't get a good view of the Opera House of the Bridge
) There is also the Eureka tower observation deck which I've not yet had a chance to visit.
The circle tram is worth a ride although the bit along LaTrobe Street is not very exciting. There is a restaurant tram as well. Not tried it myself but seems to get good reviews.
The Shrine of Remembrance is in a nice park setting with good views towards the CBD.
I've not been but I've heard good reports about the Melbourne Gaol visit.
Wandering aimlessly often pays dividends too.
Melbourne Museum is probably best with kids. For adults it's pretty average and suffers from a lack of booty found in European museums.
