Re: Dog nipping - Does it ever stop......
We have had two Border Collie (Sheep dog) crosses and they both were prone to nipping, but mainly when over excited. We just squeal like an injured dog and they stop......it's like a dogs rule of play...if someone gets hurt you stop. That or a firm no and no more playing.
Works for us......hope you work something out soon. Jan |

Hello,
We have a puppy aged 8 months and he is still nipping, we have completed puppy school and now attend dog obedience but this constant nipping is driving us mad, we can't even stroke him without him turning around to give us a nip. The dog obedience class doesn't give us much help regarding the problem so I was wondering if anyone can anyone give me any advice on how to stop it or when it does stop ? He has lots of toys to bite, he picks on nobody in particular he just likes to give us all a nip which is starting to really drive me mad...... and could be more serious problem the older he gets.... :( |

I wouldn't growl at a dog. And you don't need to smack it. If you do, you'll make it 'hand shy' and that can be an issue.
http://www.dogtrainingbasics.com/Nipping.htm You need to go with the high pitched squeal technique. It's non invasive and non punishing, but your dog will not like it one bit. You need to startle him and then turn your back on him, walk away from him and ignore him. It's kind of the same as having a child... you put them in 'time out'. Dogs don't like being ignored. No eye contact, turn your back, ignore (everyone else should in the house/room too) and then try again. Should take him about 5 mins to get it. Less if he's clever. |
Re: Dog nipping - Does it ever stop......
Our puppy school taught bite moderation, when they bite say Ouch loudly and move slowly away for a few seconds, repeat this as they get softer. After a few weeks I'm now at the stage with my 13 week old pup that I say ouch when she is only lightly touching me with her teeth.
The water spray trick has worked very well stopping ours from biting things such as trousers and now on the odd times she tries something we don't want her doing, no generally does to stop it. Now just got to work out how to stop her running away with the toilet roll if we don't shut the loo door properly :D |

Both these work and Molly has pretty much stopped biting. I will now work on her shitting and pissing anywhere she feels like and never coming when called. Oh, and the eardrum busting barking. Who would have thought a 2kg dog could be so loud! I blame Emelems.

Dogs do not scruff shake each other to communicate dominance. It is not a dog behaviour. It's a predatory 'prey' behaviour and you should NOT do it with your dog.
http://www.k9concept.com/articles/leadership.html No pain to the dog just a little scruff shake and a growl and it did as it was told, seemed to be some kind of instinct thing. results were amazing! |

According to the Aussie sheep herder at the 'BigSheep' in the SW England that is exactly what they do to their pups when the start to play up, it was a technique of dog training he explained and then enacted when one of the younger dogs wasn't doing as he was told.

The results might have been amazing, but it's generally accepted in modern thinking that it's outdated and no longer appropriate for the reasons I have already explained. Mother dogs do not 'shake' their puppies. They lift them by the scruff. Dogs shake their prey. Ergo if you shake your dog, you are making it fearful. Correcting the behaviour through fear is considered bad for the puppy.
