okay, dont slate me on this
.........both O/H and myself have the same criteria for a great place to live. it might not even exist
at the moment we have fantastic beaches within a 30 minute drive. we live in port stephens, nsw. but beaches arent the be all and end all...........it would be nice to be able to go and have something to eat or drink at a place. we havent got that here. we live semi rural. we would like both, the beaches and the accessibility of eating/drinking places if we so required. we dont want it towny, and quite like this semi-rural area. we have a friend in the hunter valley, and they have loads of great eating places within a 10 minute drive/taxi ride/
east coast, preferably NSW? we would go up rather than down (oh err missus
). does it exist, this magical place in our dreams?

Hi Sleeping Beauty
I know a great little place called Cessnock......
It would be nice to have you nearer especially if you go for that job in Kurri!!
Seriously though, I hope you find what you are looking for, hopefully not Queensland, I will never see you!!
Will PM you soon, started my job this week, so been mad busy - juggling work and my unpaid housewife/mother job......it's hard getting a minute at the moment!
Hope you are good.

The only real problems with Port are:- Lack of high quality dining, No Westfieds or Myers. The best you will get there is Target. Oh and a perpetual level 3 water restriction. Oh and the biggest is a 4+ hour drive to the nearest big city (Sydney). It is in the process of expanding and becoming a giant set for neighbours though.

The two nicest rural areas in NSW that come with good restaurants and pubs, a 'buzzy' feel, close to beaches yet not far from civilization are the Byron area to the north and the Berry area to the south.
Byron is close to the Gold Coast and Brisbane and absolutely gorgeous scenery-wise. Berry has similar lovely rural scenery and is close to Sydney.

) and 30 minutes from Wollongong. I reckon the South Coast nicely combines rural and beach life.
