Conversely maybe there is a case for adding some multicultural symbols on the Union Jack these days to reflect changing times.

Should Australia ever leave the Commonwealth and become a republic, then I suppose they may want to consider it. Other than that, why would they bother?

It's not like how it used to be, now if Australia (or Canada, New Zealand etc..) become a republic at any point then it wouldn't automatically be out of the Commonwealth of Nations.

South Africa is a republic in the Commonwealth. Having Liz as HOS is not a requirement of membership.

It will all happen eventually, i.e. new flag and republic.

It's a bit of an embarrassment having another nation's insignia displayed so prominently on our flag.

It makes us seem like some sort of backwater dependency rather than the country that Australia actually is. The same goes with having the Queen of England as the head of state.

Australia's ties with the UK are very important and the shared history will always be relevant but it is well and truly time for Australia to stand by itself 100%.

Agree re remvoving the UJ from the flag, not so sure re the Queen as head of state though. It's not about being tied to the UK's apron strings, more an acceptance of the Westminster System being a fantastic form of democracy and the stability that brings.

I read somewhere, not sure how serious it is. That almost every republic has had some kind of civil war. Not sure where Canada fits in that statement,, but they do have the issue with French sepratists.

Yes...Australia will hopefully design its own flag as great as the stars and stripes and union jack in time.

The whole "backwater/dependency" argument is just rubbish, and something that is brought up to bring about false nationalistic emotions. Especially when it's linked with Asian countries and how they apparently view us.

Does Australia do direct trade with countries like China & Japan? Yes. Is there need for "approval" from Buckingham Palace or Westminster for this? No.

Australia is not viewed as some "backwater dependency" by other countries, a change of flag or ceremonial head of state will not alter how trade or diplomacy is done with other countries.
No such thing as "Queen of England".

In any case the Queen of the United Kingdom and the Queen of Australia are legally distinct and separate positions - they are just fulfilled by the same person.
