:rofl::rofl: Domination, now that's a statement. Its just a case of Bill Gates being a clever marketing sod and getting windows in to the home, so that is what the world is used to. Most companies stick to it to save retraining its staff and because the hardware is cheap ;)

Question is why not use any of the 800+?

The 800+ are all in server rooms doing important stuff (billing/serving content to the net/running databases). I use this windows laptop because its what the gaffer gave me to work on, its all that the IT bods can support, and its marginally more comfortable at this desk than in the server room. I have worked in previous offices where the IT support we more diverse and were quite happy for each user to run their choice of OS, bearing in mind certain jobs require certain tools.

I'm sure they can pop up a GUI, and in fact some of the workstation do have a gui and will run firefox etc. The big servers are far too busy to be worried about generating nice looking pretty graphics and do not have minitors and keyboards. They are no harder to use than windows once you are used to them. Again coming back to the fact, windows is popular because it's what people are used to.

Only pen pushers use mac...Which now almost all run windows anyway...
I've noticed that too, a guy here got a mac and was continually banging on about how wonderful it was, then I went to have a peek at it and it was running XP, so really its just an expensive Acer.....???

I've been running a Hackintosh for nearly a year now and I have Parallels installed running XP so that I can walk customers through issues they're having with XP as part of my computer support job. I've moved everything over to the Mac equivalent - Pages instead of Word, iTunes instead of Media Player (though in reality I always used iTunes), Firefox instead of Firefox, Bento instead of OneNote etc etc. And I'm a very happy boy indeed. :D

Probably because if you are running something mission-critical and you want uptime measured in months;not hours, you don't use Redmond's latest bug ridden pile of rubbish.

Bug ridden? That's like saying Heathrow suffers from too much air traffic!!

Since it's world's most used OS, all the numpties (script boys who just learned to use a hackers tool) and they go for windows because it's so easy in terms of usage and target (Microsoft).

Did you know that Linux suffers from hacks too??

You wouldn't hear of it because in the commercial world, Linux is like a toy!

I'm not so sure about that?

Linux runs on a hell of a lot of embedded devices and is ideally suited to an environment such as this.

Re: Do IT nerds have sense?

This thread reminds me of an IT guy I used to work with. He went on a college course to operate and maintain servers, and on the day he was supposed to be taking his practical exam he came into work. We asked him why he wasn't at college taking his exam, and he told us that the servers at the IT college had gone down and nobody could fix them! His college tutors didn't know what to do and so they had called an IT support company to get them going again!

We did ask him how much the college course was costing the company....

Linux WAS like a toy in comparison, that is rapidly changing. The likes of RedHat have Enterprise Releases, that are all the best bits from the 2 year old latest release. with (most of) the bugs fixed. These are very stable. In a commercial world, there are more stable OS's, but Linux is eating in to the market share.

Microsoft can't wait to churn out their latest and greatest, and as a result are constantly churning out patches too. Yes there are patches for Linux, but that's to be expected from an OS that was grown in peoples bedrooms. Microsoft is a rather large corporation, you would think it could get things better at the first attempt.

How do I know?

Because there is no way IT dept would be able to email you if email isn't working!

They emailed you before the email went down...

D'oh:p

No we're on a different server to them for some reason.

My Geek husband sells enterprise systems and for some time now they have worked on a Linux platform. I think that says a lot.

Sorry nearly choked on my lunch with that - I think you got it arse-about!!

In the domestic market linux is a toy - in the commercial world linux is EXTREMELY common as a server platform - largely due to its proven reliability and superior security.

I've been a linux user at home on and off (recently made the switch back to MS for my home server after 3 yrs of linux) - and my desktop at work has always been windows. However, I cant remember the last time I worked anywhere that didnt have at least SOME systems running on Linux/Unix servers... (as well as AS400s, Solaris, S390s etc etc etc) - But I've worked in lots that have nothing other than desktops and domain controllers on Windows.

In my professional experience its quite clear the bigger and more powerful the systems are you're dealing with the less likely you are to be using MS products.

Ha, ha ha!

I knew someone would almost choke reading that comment!

I apologise for that...

I admit that I do use Linux( or Ubuntu to be exact) as well as Vista at home...Why? Ubuntu is great for doing some cool stuff and requires less hassle (for example Vista requires UCL to be checked before running any app - Sure you can switch this off but why??))

Anyway, for home use , Vista is superb (although depends which version) and the plug and play is the best things that has happened as far as novice users are concerned (most of the clients in the market!!)..

So hope you still had a good lunch...I was only pulling your leg mate:thumbsup:

I wouldn't say he had to be clever at marketing to do this....we've had windows in our home ever since the house was built!...
