And ask about the paper quality. You don't want veal from a calf fed on cheap paper.

It just means that the calves were fed a milk formula instead of being left on their moms. They are then slaughtered and processed at around 18 - 20 weeks old and the meat is supposed to be more tender and it has a paler colour to it.

In fact most calves, whether used for dairy or meat, are taken from their mothers at, or just after birth as this prevents bonding.

Dairy cows have their babies taken straight away obviously for their milk production and veal industry.
Beef cattle are usually raised by their mom until about 9 months old and are then weaned.
