I went to the dentist - for the first time in about 10 years last month.

I was so thankful to have the insurance. The initial consultation plus three tooth xrays came to about $270 in total however knocking off the insurance contribution I only paid $30 which was towards the xrays.

I had to go back for three fillings. They came to $360 although the insurance paid $240 of that
Based on 10 years premiums at $5 per week = $2,600 in dental premiums.

Not sure about the economy of that ....
However, if I could get dental cover for only $5 per week, I would take it...

I assumed that $5 was just for dental. That is a good premium. Who is it with ?

I just did a quick quote for myself, for extras only, and got:

Premium:
$16.73 weekly ($860 per year)

Cover:
General Dental: Unlimited
Optical Items $250
Endodontic Services $400
Orthodontic $400

Dental treatment in Australia is very expensive. There is generally no Medicare rebate.

Full cover Hospital and Extras
  • $94.86 per week with nil excess
  • $86.84 per week with a $250 excess
  • $72.72 per week with a $500 excess

Hmmm... this seems better....

Dental Plus ONLY
Extras benefits, paid back as 50% of the cost

So if I spend $1,200 on dental I get back $600, leaving me $90 in pocket after the premium..
This is why I always end up not bothering

BUT.... one day, I may regret not having insurance..... that is the risk we take. Same with car insurance, if we opt to go without Comp cover on our Mercedes (not that I have a Mercedes though )
