Default dental charges - true or false??

Is it true I am going to have to take out a bank loan to have my teeth cleaned here in Oz??? I paid 18 quid at home every 6 months for a scale and polish - someone told me today it's around $120!!!!!! Is that true???? Is that why I see so many folk with gross teeth??? Please tell me it's not true!
