Must admit I thought the OP was talking about people putting household carpet on their dash similar to the way some peeps used to carpet their cars with household carpet when I was a teenager.

I've seen it. A lot of taxis have it too.
Am i missing something here? Wouldnt it be a much better idea to actually make the dashboard out of material that doesnt crack in the first place, or is that hoping too much in the 21st century??

When I first met the husband, his Viva was covered in fake fur on the inside - ceiling, side panels, seats the lot 
His handbrake, gear stick, steering wheel wands were all different sized pistons and his piece de resistance was his 8 track player on which he played ELO 24/7 (unless I turned it off in disgust). Who wouldn't have fallen in love with that

Our first car came with one & we thought it amusing, the next one didn't & after a few hot days we soon splashed out on one, I don't care how silly people think they look, the time it saves on cooling the car down is more than worth it.

cresta- I have to admit they always seemed a pretty weird idea to me-(a bit like leaving the plastic on your new sofa) I was never convinced by the 'cracking' argument as, lets face it, the damage the sun does to the cars paint by fading etc etc it seemed a bit pointless to 'protect' one bit of a car and not the rest, but are you suggesting that the dash carpet keeps the car cooler (or enables your car to cool a lot quicker)? that would be something worth considering in that case...
