Someone put one in a public swimming pool when I was in Darwin.... which I believe was some sort of local joke?

You are unlikely to encounter any in suburbia, especially in the dry season - unless you hangout in the mangroves for pleasure.

There was a 3 metre one that managed to swim through the marina lock and sunbake on a pontoon. Some poor chap on the parallel yacht had to call his boss and say 'I can't make it to work' - there's a crocodile blocking the path. What a great excuse....almost as good as 'I haven't paid the mortgage as a category 5 cyclone brought the phone network down so f.c.u.k you Northern Rock'.
