Re: The Commonwealth Games
Serious sports event:
Unlike other regional games of this type (i.e., Pan-American Games, Asian Games, All-Africa Games) which usually attract second-tier athletes, the Commonwealth Games attracts the top athletes of member nations of the Commonwealth, thus making this competition world-class in the true sense of the word (second only to the Olympic Games).
(Wikipedia.)
Britain invented them after realising that she would never win the Olympics. Her cunning plan to invent her own games and beat all her former colonies came undone when somebody pointed out (albeit far too late) that Australia is one of those former colonies...
To date, Australia has won the Games 10 times, England 6 times, and Canada once:
Winners of the Commonwealth Games
1930: England (Canada 2nd, South Africa 3rd)
1934: England (Canada 2nd, Scotland 3rd)
1938: Australia (England 2nd, Canada 3rd)
1950: Australia (England 2nd, New Zealand 3rd)
1954: England (Australia 2nd, South Africa 3rd)
