Default Chip and pin

Are all UK credit cards now chip and pin?

I used mine in Tescos the other day and she told me to put in my PIN number. I said I didn't have one........was very worried for a moment but the transaction went through ok. Should I have received a PIN number from my provider???? Can I not just sign for it like I have always done???

More difficult now to sign , my hubby is still waiting for one of his card and when he went to pay for middle sons bike for b'day his card was taken away and halfords had to phone head office before transaction went through.
My sister was frog ,marched to office by security in tesco when she forgot her number. Very embarassed .
Some place will let you sign others (jobs worth)will not.
Contact your provider as every one shop have chip and pin cards by now.

Ok thanks for that. The lady in Tescos used to be our regular Ice cream lady, my kids were on first name terms with her. Maybe thats why she let me sign

Apparently in Guildford the CCTV camera was pointed at the machine where you put your pin in and that may be how the scammers got some of the codes. So make sure you don't let anyone see you putting in your pin.

Not all cards are chip and pin yet - and if yours doesn't have a chip then you obviously can't put your PIN in.

Much of the problem is that the checkout operators work on autopilot most of the time (but hey can you blame them?).

From what I heard before leaving Australia if you do not enter your pin and sign instead that retailer will need to cover the costs if the card is abused/scammed.

UK cards are all now having to use chip and pin, the odd instance of signing if the place has a knackered machine, but the deadline is pretty much out for signing...only foreign issued cards will be asked for a signature these days, and the reader will know if they weren't UK issued cards.

I work in retail.

From the 14th February 2006 - all cards bearing a chip must be inserted into the chip reader. There are 2 types of 'chipped' cards. 'chip and pin' which will prompt for a pin and 'chipped only' cards which will prompt card holder to remove card and hand to operator. The latter style are now mostly for certain people who for (mostly) disability reasons have not been given a 'chip and pin' card.

'chip and pin' cards can now, no longer have their pin bypassed. If the retailer does try and bypass, then the card issuer may not accept the payment.

Some retailers do not have 'chip and pin' readers and still accept signatures. They are leaving themselves open here, as they will not be reimbursed on any fraudulant use of cards, by the card issuer.

Foreign cards will not have chips (or if they do, are not compatible with our c&p) These cards can be swiped through the magnetic strip reader.

for more information then see I LOVE PIN
