Have some Pont L'Eveque and triple cream sheep's cheese as we speak......from our local deli. It is expensive but SO worth it! If anyone in Geelong wants the name of the deli, ask. They have all sorts and it changes each week. Had a lovely Spanish one last week when a friend was staying........
I'm friggin sick of bland over priced cheese. I've got to stage where I'd happily pay way over the odds for imported cheese, on account of the fact that it has FLAVOUR (not popular in Australia). interestingly I mentioned Tasman on the sausage thread, and they sell a good Aussie made cheddar, plus swiss gruyere.
The monthly farmers market is also good.
I have yet to find a decent goats cheese....

This lot make pretty decent cheese. I've tried the cow's milk Brie and Camembert and can vouch for those. They also make goat's cheese http://udderdelights.com.au/.

Cheese is not on a banned list from the UK. It's being imported to Aus... Quick's Aged Cheddar for example... an excellent bitey cheddar. Specifically, that come cloth wrapped in a waxed cloth and are not 'wrapped' in any other plastic wrapping which would affect the cheese.
There are also new rules on pasteurisation too, which mean you can purchase unpasteurised French cheeses from good deli's that stock them. They're wrapped as they would be when bought in the UK and I've found the texture to be excellent.
I've recently been managing a deli in the Blue Mountains that stocks some excellent English, French, Dutch, Swiss etc cheeses, as well as a load from Tas etc.
When I don't shop there, I go to David Jones food hall for other stuff, such as Stilton, which has always been there for the past 3 years at least.

The rules for personal imports were changed when the UK was certified Foot and Mouth free - I even had an email from AQIS in case I got stopped bringing mine in - and for about 6 months travellers could bring it in themselves. There was then another case in the UK and the shutters came down again. If the UK is now free of it again and travellers can bring their own in great, I'll be there at the front of the queue.

I fancied a selection of cheese for a ploughman's type lunch, by the time I'd selected several small packs of European cheese I'd totalled about $40
So it was cheaper to go to the Pig & Whistle & have a Ploughman's & several pints of fat Yak
I did find a sort of pre packed cheese board the other day for about $7 bucks enough for two couples & 4 bottles of wine, not brilliant but nice enough to be different

The OH insisted we had some so I panicked and bought the first half decent pack I saw.Personally I'm with you and would swap it all for a night on the Fat Yak!

I've never felt the need to bring in cheese 'personally'. I just buy it in a shop.
