Cheese!
Carrying on from the Sausage thread, what is your favourite Aussie cheese? I find the tasty cheeses generally aren't, but there are some fabulous bries, camemberts etc. Milawa do some great cheeses and I found a blue that was very similar to Stilton.
Also does anyone know if you can still get Red Seal cheese in the UK? It was a very sharp cheddar type and gritty, great with oatcakes. I used to get it from ASDA, don't know if the other supermarkets stocked it. I don't see it on their website, but there is Seriously Strong which seems to have similar packaging from what I recall. If so I will get me Mum to bring some out next time she comes! |

Tassie's cheese are the best I find - their Brie is really good, and their Ashgrove cheese is pretty good too, I like the peppercorn one. Kenilworth in Queensland does some which is pretty good, and nif you look carefully you can find some imported stuff from Holland and the UK though you'll have to pay for it. I really miss farm cheeses, used to get mine from a farm shop near Lewes, allkinds of flavours including a pickled onione and a horseradish one  However I still reckon the best cheese I've ever tasted was Tasmanian Strawberry Cheese - absolutely delicious |

No can do, unless the rules have changed in the last couple of months. The UK has to be confirmed Foot&Mouth free for a certain number of years before cheese will be allowed into Australia from there again. There was a window of about 6 months a few years back when I managed to bring some in but as far as I know its still on the banned list.

Re: Cheese!
Mum arrived last Sunday with some Lake District Cheese Co strong cheddar which is yummy. I checked with AQIS beforehand and they advised there was no problem if it originated in the UK and was commercially wrapped.
I too thought the F&M outbreak was a problem but apparently not. |

Re: Cheese!
Our favourite 'everyday' cheese is Nimbin, can't stand most other cheddar types around here.
I just bought a Tassie cheese selection for socialising over the weekend actually, seem to remember that was nice from the last time. |

I did find a sort of pre packed cheese board the other day for about $7 bucks enough for two couples & 4 bottles of wine, not brilliant but nice enough to be different;) |
Re: Cheese!

There are also new rules on pasteurisation too, which mean you can purchase unpasteurised French cheeses from good deli's that stock them. They're wrapped as they would be when bought in the UK and I've found the texture to be excellent. I've recently been managing a deli in the Blue Mountains that stocks some excellent English, French, Dutch, Swiss etc cheeses, as well as a load from Tas etc. When I don't shop there, I go to David Jones food hall for other stuff, such as Stilton, which has always been there for the past 3 years at least. |
Re: Cheese!
Have some Pont L'Eveque and triple cream sheep's cheese as we speak......from our local deli. It is expensive but SO worth it! If anyone in Geelong wants the name of the deli, ask. They have all sorts and it changes each week. Had a lovely Spanish one last week when a friend was staying........
