You dont have to, but as it is so easy, and makes a usefull form of I.D. it probably makes sense to get an Aussie license

You don't so much as "change" your licence as get a QLD one in addition to the one you have - that's assuming you are in queensland! It's quite handy having it as ID.

On the subject of buying cars, we're going car hunting this weekend as our old banger has .... banged! It has passed away and gone to the great scrapyard in the sky... god rest it's engine

Up til now I've always bought from new so this will be my first time shopping for a second hand car on a low budget - so it will be an experience! Hopefully not a bad one

Its also handy not to change it, if for some reason you happen to get the wrong side of a man with a speed trap, they cannot issue points to a non AU license

In QLD, you need to prove identity to register a car. Normally a Drivers licence will do that, but for those without a licence:

They send the bill to whatever address you registered the car too.. or you can pay it if you go into the vehicle licensing place...

I didn't know about it either and I did ask my australian husband if there was anything else you have to pay other than the agreed price with the garage and he said "no" - so that would have been a nasty shock through the post! I'll be having words with him!! So I need to bear this in mind, when we go car hunting, thank heavens for this thread saving my budget!

Don't be too hard on him. The last car we bought, the duty was paid by the Car sales company, so sometimes we never even know about it.

As the figure isn't very large, once you agree a price with the saleman and they are doing the paperwork, tell them that you expect them to pay the stamp duty

Awww you're too kind to him - I did mention it to him earlier and he just started muttering about money grabbing bar-stewards and shaking his head in dismay - so he was totally unaware of it! That's a good tip about the salesman - will certainly give a try!!
